Hi I am a 59 year old ex rugby player Prop, classic big shoulders, hips and massive thighs!! Still train regularly but weight has crept up to 110kg! I want to be 90k and have started a sensible diet however this still leaves my BMI way above “normal” do I just forget this measure or is there something else to focus on? I still ski at a high level and train 3-4 times a week in the gym

Hi, Raphael4422 , Welcome.

BMI works for "normal" people... but just forget it as a guide for target weight.

The NHS BMI website also gives guidance re calorie intake for weight loss... I expect that the calorie guide figure would assume that you have high body-fat and lower lean mass than you have... Lean mass burns more calories than fat, so the calorie-to-eat guide might be low for you... You might lose half a stone in the first week or so, but, after that, monitor your weight and adjust your calorie intake to give you one or two pounds a week weight loss.

I was an endurance athlete in the 90's, and I have a high lean mass... I have just got down to 110kg!

What is important is body-fat percentage... and there are various ways of estimating it, and working out what target weight you should aim for, see:

Hello and welcome Raphael :)

I am no expert on BMI but do know that it is only a rough guide. You are obviously an active person and sound fit and healthy. Visceral fat is what you want to avoid as it can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease. To deal with this you need to cut back on the sugar and carbs, or cut it out completely.

I would use the NHS BMI calculator to assess your own personal calorie allowance and make sure you are eating at the higher end of the range, especially as you do so much exercise.

The NHS BMI calculator is not for athletic profiles.. I would suggest you ignore the NHS results if your built to play Ruby.. if you google bmi for athletes I'm sure you will find some alternatives to consider..

BUT...

You will be right to join in with this forum as much as your schedule allows as there is none like it for support, encouragement and advice...
