out with the old and in with the new

Hi my name is Rachyroo and years ago I joined here, but unfortunately for lots of reasons I lost touch . I have never seemed to lose any weight and only continued to gain it. I have now managed to get back and this time I feel if I don't lose weight then my life might as well be over!!! so please I would love to have some support, right now I feel so lost and have no idea where to start. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and have been told that I must have two replacements, but I really want to try and lose weight first, rather than go down the road of surgery. Exercise is difficult but I try and do some power walking using Leslie Sansone DVDs. I crave chocolate and sweets all the time and am so miserable and unhappy. Any help and information as to how to use this fourm would be great. Please help me I am desperate. I feel time is running out I need to have a life not an existence

Morning Rachyroo

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

There is a lot of support here for you so you have come to the right place. I had osteoarthritis in both my knees and have had 2 total knee replacements, this time last year I could'nt walk across my own living room! Now I do an average 10,000 steps a day, lots of gardening and walking my dog and I've lost 5 stone following the nhs 12 week plan. So please don't be so hard on yourself, if I can do it so can you, just one step at a time, you can do this!

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Have a look at the Daily Diary which you can find on the Home page in Events. It is where all the members are sharing their daily plans on what they are eating and any exercise they are doing. This thread will give you some ideas on how to start.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

We have daily weigh ins so why not come along and join us today. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Have a good first week.

I know you said you crave chocolate and sweets but you didn't say that you actually ate them. Even if you do, are you eating many of them? When I first joined here I had never lost any weight on diets because I wasn't eating much as I always wanted to lose weight faster so just ate as little as I could all the time. Have you checked out how many calories you should be easting on the NHS bmi calculator to actually lose weight? If not do check how many you should have as this gives personal amounts for each person. Because I always ate less I didn't eat as many as it tells you to and I never lost any weight. I was advised that if I didn't eat between the exact amounts it advises you to have your body thinks you are starving it so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes means you end up putting weight on. When I was told this I decided to up my calories and started then to lose weight and have now lost 2st. Please make sure you don't make this same mistake as I was doing it for years because I was only having around 1000cals a day. Good luck with your journey.

Hi thank you for your reply. Unfortunately yes I do eat them and I am trying so hard not to. I think sometimes I crave sweet things when I am bored, or emotionally down. I have got to make changes , this extra weight is controlling me and I feel like a prisoner within my own body. I cannot enjoy life as I am feeling so fat and ugly. Stopping the chocolate and sweets would be a good starting point. I probably eat far too many calories and exercising isn't easy. Anyway a new week tomorrow!!! I am hoping that now I have joined this site that I will have help, support and make a few friends along the way, Hope you have a great week. How long did it take you to lose the 2 stone well done !! right now I would be happy to lose 2lbs lol

Hi there overall I first joined in mid November 2016 but I hadn't lost weight for the first few weeks I think it was up to three or four before I found out I wasn't eating enough calories. After this I started losing weight so I wouldn't really say the weight loss started till around early to mid December 2016. I also wish I had chosen to eat around the mid to top amount of calories as I would have amounts to drop to if I am not losing weight but at the moment I can't do this on weeks I stay the same because I did struggle at the beginning to even eat the lower amount it gave me back then so I definitely wouldn't have been able to eat the top amounts. The amounts do also drop as you lose weight too so do make sure you check again as you lose weight. Still check your calories as you may be surprised and at least you do know the amounts you should be trying to stick to lose weight. As long as you don't go over the calories it tells you to you can actually eat whatever you want as there is no foods that is actually restricted. Good luck

Hi Rose,

thank you for replying to me. So interested in how you have coped with osteoarthritis and how it has now improved!! I really must lose weight the pressure I am putting on both my knees for being overweight is awful. I feel if I had never gained the weight in the first place , I wouldn't have such terrible knees now!! Not sure how I start the NHS weight loss plan and as I work away every other week and live in other peoples home as part of my job, just not sure how I can realistically keep a diet going, but will try. Tomorrow I will be travelling home for the week, so maybe I can start it this week. Hope you have a great week, and once again thank you for replying.
