Hello Everyone, This is my first post to the community and I am not used to being part of one. Anyway here goes!

I am 57 obese and have decided for health reasons I really need to do something about my weight and fitness. I gave up smoking 18 months ago and this is the next step to a healthier me.

I will be starting week 4 of the nhs plan tomorrow. Unfortunately this week I have not done any exercise due to being so tired, I have no energy at all, I also have a sore hip and shoulder. As I am exercising at home I've been using my exercise bike every day for 10 - 15 mins and on a Tuesday I look after my granddaughter and walk her in the stroller to playgroup which is about 30 mins there and back on top of the lifting and playing we do throughout the day (she is walking).

I know I need to build up my muscles a bit, do you think it is better to use dumbells or resistance bands and if so can you reccommend any. And is there anything I can do to prevent this tiredness. I have stuck to the 1400 calories a day which were reccommended and lost 7 lbs in the first week and 2lb in the second week so far, my next weigh in is tomorrow.

Sorry to ramble on, but I could really do with some advice right now. I hope everyone else is doing well.

Hi, welcome. Are you female? I am not an expert on fitness but I believe a balance of cardio and strength building is best with some weight bearing. Lots of people on here seem to know a lot and I am sure they will help.

With regard to tiredness, it does take a while to get into a diet, how tall are you? 1400 doesn't sound like much. I eat protein and veg and don't feel hungry in between meals. People who feel hungry tend to calorie count and some eat small quantities of sugary food which keeps them under calories but still not full. Good luck!

Hi Thank you for your advice, Yes I am calorie counting and I am trying to keep my protein up and my sugar down. I am female, 5ft 6 and very overweight. I guess it will take time to balance itself out as you say. Thanks again.

Apart from fruit I wouldn't eat anything with sugar in. I found the only thing that worked for me was cooking everything from scratch so I don't eat any processed food. Sugar is hidden in so much stuff. Yesterday I went to Nando's, had chargrilled veg and I could taste the sugar in it. Needless to say I didn't eat it.

Hi and welcome Rosie :)

To be sure that you're eating the right amount for you, enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator and read this

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you :)

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news :)

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate :)

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too :)

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

How can I join a weigh in? I've been weighing Monday morning and would like to keep to that if possible. Also how do I get a newbie badge please.

I think you might be surprised if you look at the NHS BMI checker and see the calorie allowance suggested there. It really doesn't pay to go too low with calories and 1400 seems low. I'm 5 2 tall and obese and very inactive and currently losing well on 1500.
