Right, let's sort this out...

My weight has been gradually creeping up for several years now and despite occasional short bursts of activity to try and get it under control, previous efforts have never stuck. I have an opportunity now - I'm studying for the next few months and not working, I need to make this work. I need to get to a healthy weight. I'm heading for heart problems and diabetes if I'm not careful and I'm at a point now where that could be avoided.

I weighed myself for the first time in ages today and my BMI is 34. I need to lose at least 3 stone. I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I'm also giving up alcohol as that tends to lead to further bad habits, not to mention the calories that are actually in booze itself.

I must, must, must, start getting regular exercise.

Any advice for getting into a healthy routine..?

Good luck to everyone else on this journey. Let's DO THIS!

Hello SLK78 . :-)

Like you I joined partly because I am concerned about type 2 diabetes and wanted to improve my general health. I have managed to lose a stone since August and now Christmas is over it's time to start losing weight again!

Have you checked out the pinned post for newbies, it has lot's of great advice to get you going:

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

When I started out, I started a journal and made notes of what I ate, it can help you to focus on your eating habits and what you might need to change. I also logged my weight loss goals and progress.

Finding a form of exercise you enjoy really helps to boost weight loss. I go swimming occasionally and walk everywhere and it seems to really help. Lot's of people here go running or to the gym, it all depends what suits you.

I am sure more folk will be along with advice for you but please feel free to post your questions. Everyone here is very friendly, and keen to offer support!

Wishing you well, and happy new year!

The NHS 12 week plan is an excellent starting point and gives loads of helpful information about how to break bad habits. Also do use the NHS BMI calculator it gives you the range of calories you can eat and still lose weight- I had been eating 1200 for a year and losing a bit then putting it on. Now am eating 1400 and losing on average just under a lb a week. Good luck 😉
