Habits, so hard to create new ones but so easy to fall back into old ones

I have been yo yo dieting for years and have formed new habits over and over again. I feel great and love the fact I am doing something for myself. Then old habits slip back in and I slowly put on all the weight I've lost this in its self has become an habit how do you break this horrible routine. I've put 1lb on for the last two weeks after losing 2stone 3lb. I've done this 3/4 Times in the past 6 years and each time it's harder to start again. Any helpful advise or tips welcome :0)

hi - I'm the queen of yo-yo dieting so know where you're coming from. The thing is, a one pound gain in 2 weeks is nothing, so draw a line under it and get back on track. You know that if you carry on what you've been doing to lose 2 stone 3 lbs, you will succeed. Take one day at a time - it does work :-)

Thank you for the words of support. I guess I have kind of broken the habit by asking and knowing I need help.

This is why it is so so so important to make changes for life, people YoYo (including myself in the past(Many Times)) because they set out on diet purely aimed at losing weight as efficiently and quickly as possible with an end goal at which point they then revert back to the bad eating habits that caused the weight gain in the first place.

Change your eating habits for life, eat for health and then control your weight with the quantity of that healthy food you are eating, when you reach a point where you consider you're happy with your weight, simply increase the amount you are eating to maintain the loss. Obviously I appreciate this is not as easy as it sounds, however it should be the basic thesis behind any weight loss plan.

Make sure you visit nhs.uk/Livewell/weight-loss... to take a look at the 12 week plan, there is lots of resource there to help and of course you'll find great support here in the community :)

And yes admitting you need help and have an issue is a massive step in the right direction, congratulations.

Thank you olsbean wise and useful words I'll take a look at the site. I have been following a low fat diet since August with one treat meal a week. this has been working up until a holiday when I relaxed just a bit and have found it very hard to regain control. Since Sunday have been back on track but my god it's hard to regain the mind set of healthy living!

Hi triggernic,

I so agree with OlsBean.

Don't take up a weight loss regime to lose weight - do it to change your body weight once and for ever. Like both OlsBean and myself, become an "ex-fattie" in the way a person might become an "ex-smoker".

You know what makes a difference and you know you CAN do it.

All those dodgy eating habits? Nah, don't do them any more!

Actually, I almost can't believe some of my old eating habits and I'd be far too embarrassed / ashamed to ever admit them here!

But .... that's the past.

Good luck with your maintenance efforts.
