Teething,Fever,Infection? How long do I leave it before I seek medical help.

Hello all, I stumbled accross this site when searching for symptoms so hope it will be helpful!

My little boy is 14 Months. He is generally as very happy active boy who very very often cries..

Now this morning he awoke 2 hours earlier than normal in floods of tears, to the extend of gagging and screaming as such. - I have never seem him like this.

I took his pj's off, so just down to a vest. Gave him some calpol (05:30). I thought he was teething as he was dribbling and had his fingers in his mouth.

He calmed down at around 06:15 and fell to sleep to wake up 15 minutes later in the same screaming state. I gave him some bonjela and he seemed to brighten up, a few smiles, although still very clingy.

He is drinking lots of juice and doesnt want to eat.

At around 09:30 his temperature was 39.1. He was very clammy to touch.

He seems very drouzy and has had 4 naps since 5. (Normally 1 a day)

He is extremely clingy and totally out of charater. Is this common for teething? He has around 14 teeth already and have never had this issue before. How long do I leave him in this situation, giving calpol, and monitoring the temperature before I seek further help?

Hi there,

It's such a worry when they're ill isn't it. At his age, I would guess that he's starting to get his molars through - they are a killer, my son suffered horribly!

That being said, his temperature would prompt me to go to the doctors. According to nhs direct, anything over 37.5 is a fever - I know it's hot today but it could be a sign of tonsillitis or something. The fact he's drinking lots is really good, is he seeing lots too?

Please don't worry - I'm sure it is his teeth and I would normally just dose them up with calpol and let them take it easy but a call to your gp wouldn't hurt.

I hope he's better soon!

Hello, teething is common BUT have you checked his glands to see if they are swollen? My little boy was about that age and he was doing exactly that but his temp was about 40. I took him to the doc and they thought he had meningitus so we went in an Ambulance to A&E from the docs, they discovered it was tonsilitus thank god.

You can give him Brufen and calpol alternativley every 2 hours, it works a treat. If it is tonsils then you can get this throat spray that you can pick up in any chemist, it is in a green/white container which allows them to eat after a few sprays.

He is weeing plenty. - Although to think of it hasnt had a #2 in a 2 days which is also unlike him. His throat seems fine, he is prone to coughs but it has never bothered him like this, so I didnt think it would be his throat. I will check though. To get an appointment with GP is like asking the queen to cook you tea. So if i did anything it would most probably be NHS Direct/A&E

Ha - I changed GP surgery this year as my old one was like that, seeing a doctor a month after you've been ill isn't always helpful!

Call nhs direct and see what they say first, A&E is never much fun and I'm sure it's nothing serious x

Ha, I know what you mean about the GP. When he had his throat infection I rang at 11am and got an "emergency" appointment at 5pm and they made me feel like I was wasting there time if it was serious, he got carted off in an ambulance so they knew it was. Good luck and hope you get it sorted.

if u go on the nhs direct website it gives u a symptom checker and itll run through some typical triage questions and then tell u best action to take at the end. Not full-proof but certainly something that can help ease ur worry xx
