A Lesson in Asking for Help

Hi All, this is something I posted about quite a while back, but thought it might be a good reminder to anyone who needs it. Today, this very lesson played out in my life in a way that made me cry happy tears!

Many of you have mentioned in one way or another, that you find it difficult to ask for help for a variety of reasons. Asking for help comes with feelings of guilt or shame or other negative feelings. I am here today with a life lesson that I learned from my therapist (credit where credit is due).

Asking for help can be a wonderful, positive experience. People, in general, love to help someone in need. Turns out, asking someone for help can make their day. When someone helps you, you may be putting a big smile on their face. Asking for help doesn't make you weak. It gives you a superpower to make someone happy by helping you. So next time you need a hand with something, don't feel bad reaching out. Make someone's day and ask for help. It can be positively wonderful. πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—

Help is not always needed but is always appreciated. I usuallky try to do most things by myself with a "use it or lose it" philosophy, but I really appreciate helpful strangers in our world.

Difficulty asking for help is a big problem, no doubt about it. One problem I have is that I seem to be OK (though I now use a rollator most of the time but so do a lot of people), and if I ask for help, I'm apt to get questioning looks as if I'm asking for something I don't really need. Many MS problems just aren't very obvious to people who know you, and even those who know you well don't always remember that you have this weird neurological condition.

I agree. I've been using a rollator for years now, but those invisible symptoms can be quite challenging. I get looks from some folks who assume that as long as I hold my walker, I can function normally. Far from it!
