Cold for 3 weeks question

Hello I am just curious about an infection that i am having. I have had a cold for 3 weeks now. I was tested for covid, strep throat and RSV. All were negative. Doctors say it is just a virus and will take its course. I just want an antibiotic to clear it up. They say it wont work. Why can't i just try. I have to blow my nose every morning for about an hour before it clears up. I cough green crap in morning. Sorry i know that is gross. But this crap is hanging on and i am tired of it.

I am on ocrevus so i know infections might be a thing. I do pretty well on ocrevus so i don't want to change my meds for a dumb cold.

My question to you all is

Will a dose of solumedrol help this? I haven't called my neurologist yet i am just going to urgent care and my primary doctor. He wont give me an anitbiotic or prednisone. Oh and my lungs are clear when i do go to doctor

Sorry this is so long i am just really wanting to get better. Thanks for reading and any suggestions you may have.

Jenny

I'm sorry you're miserable, but you're probably half way through it. Viruses usually last 2-6 weeks. Antibiotics and steroids are not going to do anything. You did not mention what your over the counter regimen has been? To lessen snot, I like DayQuil and NyQuil, but can only tolerate a half dose or else I get terrible headaches. I use sterile water and sinus rinse packet with my Neti bottle to flush out the pile of morning sinus goo that's accumulated overnight. A hot steamy shower in the morning might help get some of that out faster also, if heat doesn't cause MS issues. I hope this helps!

Antibiotics work on bacteria not viruses so they don't stop a cold, but if you have green snot it may indicate a secondary bacterial infection which antibiotics might help. Did you tell the doctor you had green stuff?

Or it might just be a virus that will run its course. I hope you feel better soon.

There is a traditional cold cure that I'm not really recommending that involves a bottle of whisk(e)y and a hat. It goes: hang the hat on the bed-post, drink the whisky until you see 2 hats, get into bed. I am not medically qualified, but I like a good Scotch whisky occasionally.

All I can suggest is to cough up and spit out as much gunk as you can, so it doesn't fester and get infected, and get fresh air if you can without getting too cold, so you aren't breathing in the viruses you just breathed out. I once heard that when you recover from a cold you should use a new toothbrush to prevent getting reinfected

Viruses usually have to run their course. You can try vitamin C & Zink. If I feel a ca old coming on I take 1000mg of Vit C 3 times a day & 50 mg of Zink once a day. It helps fight the virus for me. Your body doesn't store vitamin C but it does store Zink so you need to be careful not to take too much.

Hello jkdavid. Pray 🙏 you're doing a better each day. I understand you have questions about Solu -Medrol? Well, of course we're our Neuro's, but I have had at 19 infusion treatment with SM. Now, I been on my My journey since 2008, and I can honestly say, as I get older; less need. I normally was at my "breaking point" of pain, numbness the dizzies and pounding migraine! They're big Loaded Steroids and most doc's will prescribe at least 3 - 5 days for maximum relief. Then tape -off with oral Prednisone for 7 days. Everyone reacts differently; some (like me) feel jittery a little wiped out! This only the first few days, then I start to feel like myself. Most important, talk to your Neurologist. and don't suffer in pain. Doctor's normally use Solu when things are rough. Too many steroids can have side effects, my dentist told me this. Blessings to you and I hope you feel better and this was helpful. Also, some doctor's can approve the treatment with Solu at home with a nurse. I did that way during COVID. Again Blessings. Im really sorry your dealing with this🤗 I know how you feel , l had it last month... it lasted forever! Then, when you thought it was gone it comes back😢 You have to let it run its course, my dr said... drink alot! And rest! (I like the whiskey idea that Kit10 has )

I had that, along with COVID last month,  jkdavid99 . Rest, drink plenty of fluids, inhale steam, blow your nose a lot, and gargle with a saline solution. It got things moving out of my sinuses. It does take time. 🙏

Hello again, I hope you're feeling a better. Just checking, I shared my journey with Solu Medrol, hope it's helps with any questions you may have. Infusion/steroids help when our symptoms "rear their ugly head.". Talk to your Neurologist about your discomfort and he/she can decide if an infusion is warranted . In some situations Prednisone in pill form will give you comfort. I have had both and I did start to feel better . My last infusion was 2 years ago 🙏. Keep me posted with everything - praying for you. NeeC
