Recently saw my ophthalmologist and I was told I have the worst dry eyes he’s ever seen. I have been using eye drops but now I am seriously using eye drops…Refresh eye drops 6x during the day, prednisone drops 2x a day, gel drops at night, moist heat eye compress 1x a day, new humidifier plus I have seriously cut down on using my ceiling fans (not easy to do in Phoenix, AZ…home of the over 110 degrees for over 30 days). All this stuff has really helped. I have a follow up at the dry eye clinic in a week. Who would think there would be a dry eye clinic!
Got the below article from one of the MS websites. I’m going to ask both my ophthalmologist and neurologist about this.

I’ve never heard of this so I looked it up. I don’t think my doctor would prescribe this for me because one of the side effects is high blood pressure which I already have…but I’ll ask at my appointment next week. Thank you for your insight!
No, cyclosporine eye drops DO NOT cause high blood pressure because the amount of cyclosporine that gets into the body is very, very small. Cyclosporine given orally or IV (to suppress organ transplant rejection) can cause high blood pressure.
Hello. 👋 I also have very dry eyes and I go to an eye doctor for this. My tear ducts get clogged and the doctor manually expresses the ducts and gets out a thick substance that clogs. It's uncomfortable but it helps. Besides MS I have sjogren's syndrome which affects the eyes causing them to be very dry. I have a prescription called cequa eye drops.

I had something with my eyes a few years ago, and it looked like Sjogrens eyes 🫣 Very painful! I have a fancy lid scrub, a lash medication (they fell out), and have to squeeze my lids shut a few times per day to get the oil moving and massage the area; in addition to the hot moist compresses. It's worlds better than it was. I will try no ceiling fan and a humidifier!
I would be very surprised if your doctor did not consider the diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome in your case. As I physician, I would always put that at the top of my differential diagnoses list if a person had extremely dry eyes and another autoimmune disease. Perhaps he did a symptom review and decided that you do not otherwise fit that diagnosis.
Thank you for your insight! I blame myself for not telling my neurologist about my dry eyes. I have a telemedicine appointment next week and I have both on my notes.
Goldilockssearching I would encourage you to try the plugs. I did nott feel anyting at all when the opthamologist put them in if that is your concern. They are not noticable and I still wear makeup on my eyes as well. I also have extreme dry eye and use drops 3x's a day.
My eye dr diagnosed me with dry eye like 3 years ago and said it was most likely from fans and hormones (was almost 40 at the time). I sleep with a fan on at night because I get so hot sometimes (damn hormones). He had given me some eye drop samples to use. I have since found different drops that I really like; Thera tears - EXTRA dry eye therapy. They come in a box of 2 that I have delivered from Amazon every so many months. I keep one at my desk and one in my bedroom.
Wow! I don’t post very often … more read about other people’s issues. I’ve received many helpful suggestions and some are over the counter! Sometimes I feel like I’m on an island. Now I know I’m definitely not! Thank you ALL so much.
I also have been dealing with extreme dry eyes. I found a treatment that works. It's Siccasan for nite time & Siccaforte for morning & noon. A person on this forum told me about it. It's a gel but dissipates quickly & truly hydrates. It doesn't have any petroleum in it like some of the gels do. I have to wear a CPAP mask that loves to leak & really dry my eyes, but when using this stuff they don't get near as dry. You can get it on Amazon.
