20 minutes UNAIDED walk…

…in 95f direct sunlight!!! I’m not recommending anyone try this but I will be contacting my care team Monday AM .

The story… Denise won’t admit it but she’s worried about me swimming off our beach, in the Kettle River. I was swimming before I could ride a horse, which was way before I could walk! So she bought us a 10’ inflatable pool for the yard. It’s un heated. After filling it with 48f well water I hopped in. An hour later, I was blissfully shivering uncontrollably. Outside air temp was 95f.

First off, she had to help me get in to the pool. Getting out, I practically jumped out! I could stand without my hiking sticks. So I walked! I’m mean long shivering strides, without foot drop or crossing my right leg hard across my left leg. I have a kitchen chair on the back porch, in order to doff/don dirty work boots. I walked 10 yds to it, picked it up and carried it back to the pool UNAIDED! Sitting in chair, I was able to lift right leg 4-5” off the ground, actually activating my dead right hip flexor! So by then I thought I have to document this. Back to house for cell phone, back out to chair where D videoed me activating r hip flexor. And also 5 yd. walk away and back yo her UNAIDED!

So this is all in direct sunlight and you all know my challenges with heat sensitivity. I headed off to feed livestock. It was amazing. I got another 10 minutes or so then the fatigue started setting in. I had to shorten stride. Started to drag r foot. No shivering, was getting hot. I made it back to house all UNAIDED!

Before being told how dangerous hypothermia is, know I have from yrs of search and rescue, decompression diving, teaching recreational scuba diving in the Puget Sound plenty of knowledge. I am also a graduate of LEMOS., Law Enforcement Mountain Operations School (January at Priest Lake, ID) Thank you for your concerns.

Only bad side effect was the post warming funk over being unable to walk unaided. That hurts! Unfortunately I texted the videos to my PT before thinking it through. Still might repeat the cooling before my next session. It’s only 3 miles from home to PT. I’d love to see the look on her face when I walk in UNAIDED!

This also explains my love for sitting in the river after haying during the summer. Always felt better with a Margarita and some shiver… always blamed the Margarita!

I am the same age as you, have ppms and have had the same results as you after swimming in cool water. So much so I will go to a nearby lake or pool because it makes my body feel so good. It's hard to put into words the relief I feel even if it is temporary.

I've done cryotherapy a couple times in the past. Always great results, but never lasting long enough. The simpler things like my windbreaker for a winter coat, or that plus a sweater when temps fell below 0°F, worked for years winters. Now, at least a room with a window air conditioner cranked as low as it will go gives me a place to recharge in the summer. Like taking drinks of water out in the desert, the a/c helps too. That along with lots of ice water!
