Deer Season

The deer are out and about all over the area. As you drive down the highway you have to be on the lookout for deer as they feed close to the road a lot. When they see a car coming they run right out into the road rather than back into the woods. You don't even get to keep it unless you file for a permit to tag it & a permit to keep it. A deer surpasses the 5lb road kill law. Yes, we have a law that allows people to pick up road kill up to 5lbs a day. Actually, there are several states that allow it.

Then we have the deer that feed in our yard. We've had deer in our yard the past several days & they were out there at 4:30 am this morning, and I was asleep. Jack, our dog saw them as he looked out the window next to my bed. He started barking at them. After his first bark. I was doing the Garfield hang 10 on the ceiling. There is nothing like getting your heartbeat going from at rest of 65bpm to a running speed of 90bpm in less than 8 seconds, with one eye open & one eye closed, hanging off the side of the bed for dear life & wondering what in the world just happened. Then Jack barks again. I started to come to my senses & realize it was my dog barking at something outside. I looked out the window & there were 3 adorable deer out there mowing the lawn for breakfast. I was relieved that it wasn't someone trying to break into the house. But then again if it was he would be whining & wanting to play with them. He never meets a stranger unless it is another animal. Last week he met a cat for the first time. She smacked him for being rude & jumping toward her.

Hope everyone is enjoying the cooler fall days!

No deer here, hairbrain4 , but I have been serenaded by packs coyotes! They are elusive but they let you know that they are close by! We also have bobcats around. The hubs saw one the other day in our backyard! Not surprising since we have a bumper crop of cute bunnies around. Oh deer! :-D

Oh we have those too! Along with bears. There's been one going around my friend's house on the other side of town. My daughter had on in her house & she moved back to town. The thing about coyotes & bobcats is to keep any animals you have inside. This sounds bad but it happens... they can end up as dinner for those critters. It happens all the time around here.😟

I know, hairbrain4 , my two fur babies are indoor cats! Even I do not go for a stroll after sunset! :-D

Cats don't tolerate rudeness.🤣😂🤣😂

As a kid we had a large great dane and a small black and white cat. That cat ruled the house and she made sure everybody knew who was in charge. She gave that dog so many bloody noses that he got to the point that if he saw her come in the room, he'd give a hurumph and leave the room. However that cat pushed her luck too far one day. Nearly took out my little sister's eye, so my dad gave the cat to a local farmer. She lived out the rest of her days as a barn cat. The dog was happy to see her go.

As for the deer, my little sister is convinced that they know when hunting season starts, because they all seem to move from the woods to her neighborhood and don't move back until the season is done.😂🤣😂🤣😂

Sometimes cat's can go just a bit too far for their own good. As for those deer... they were smart!😄

I wish my deer were that smart! I've spent months now monitoring a herd of 13 -- 4 does, 6 fawns, and 3 young bucks of varying ages -- but they've all disappeared. I'm afraid they left the safe space of my little woods and have gone up the mountain. If so, most of them will be somebody's supper next month.

Good wake-up call 🤪 Regular deer season opens up here tomorrow in Idaho. Been seeing lots of campers headed out of town. My views have changed on hunting, if you really need the meat 🥩 that’s great but, for most it’s cheaper to buy it. Don’t get me wrong I still love to camp 🏕 👍🏼😉

I agree on the hunting... if you need the meat great but if its for just a trophy...stop it! But people around here need the meat. And the ones that don't need it do donate it to the shelters here. And camping is fun!🤣

My entire family hunt(ed)s except me. Im not a fan of it. But... I get it, if you use the meat and are thinning the herd because there are to many, I get it... But dont ever tell me Im eating it!! 😐🤗💕🌠

We have deer in our yard at random times, but lately they have been around more. We don't feed them but they love the trees to nibble from and to rest in the yard. Yesterday, they were here at least 8 hours! Mom and her twins.

I live in Memphis, TN.. you wouldn't think that we would have "Deer Crossing" signs in the city.. but we do.. and most of the time they don't cross there.. haha So we have to keep a look-out for them everywhere.. Just to let you know, if you ever come to Memphis, TN.. Look out for the deer.. !!!!!

You would not think they would be in a busy city like Memphis, would you? But south of Southaven, they are everywhere! I commute daily on a lonely, rural highway, and in the winter, I have to drive sloooowly in the evenings. They love to pop out from behind trees and cross the road. Deer can tear up vehicles here, but I am told that drivers "die" out West by hitting elk. So, I am not complaining! 🦌

Oh, I've been there & seen the deer crossing signs where the deer don't cross. I'm in Mena, AR not too far from Memphis.🤗

The road kill thing could be solved if your community followed wisconsin's lead and put up "DEER CROSSING" highway signs. We all know deer read very well, so any deer that are struck by traffic were merely hooligans who skipped school to eat grass! And yes, the grass habit among deer youth is out of control. But aren't recovery programs better than smashing into them qhen they can't read the signs?

🤣😂🤣 Maybe they need glasses? Everytime I see the deer crossing sign, I look up for the raindeer... They look like they are flying after all!☺🤣😂🎃🤗💕🌠

Maybe deer should be in schools like fish rather than herds. I bet they don't even pronounce the 'h' after eating all that grass. 🤣

I live in a fairly rural area and our deer live, next door to our house, in woods that are posted. The neighbor across the street has a steadfast rule about feeding the “home” deer and not hunting them so they know they are safe on either side of the street. Oh, and they stop and look both ways before crossing the road!! I kid you not and it’s hysterical to see. We had a doe here that was infamous in the neighborhood(I thinks she taught the street crossing class). She had a birth defect that both of her front legs bent at a weird angle. She had a set of twins every year and she lived so long the she probably built the herd in our neighborhood by herself. She’s been missing for about 2 years now but her progeny live on!!
