Total knee replacement

my left leg is my weak (but not too bad) ms leg. I only use a cane when I am walking long distances, standing for long time, etc. Has anyone had total knee replacement on their ms leg? And if you had spinal anesthesia, how did your leg react? I have to have surgery but concerned about the spinal anesthesia and rehab difficulty. Please advise...thanks.

Good luck with your surgery vickisue55 Don't think I have heard of 'spinal anesthesia' before so I had to look it up. Sounds like what they give to moms that are going to be delivering their baby soon to help numb the pain. Hope someone that has had experience can give you more info.

I haven’t personally had a spinal block, but I have had friends who have, but not with ms. You never know that you might find ms relief in the leg due to them numbing it. I hope someone can give you some sound advice, let us know how you get on, Blessings Jimeka 🦋 💐

vickisue55 Good luck with the knee replacement. I haven't had a knee replaced but know many who have. Recovery seems to vary. Some come back fully, others not so perhaps depending on how strong someone was prior to surgery.

As many here know, I broke my ankle in early September. The break required surgery and internal fixation. Now, almost 6 months later, one incision has not healed but for the past two weeks I am fully weightbearing. I do notice that my right foot and leg tire quickly; it is painful to stand still without support for any length of time (oddly, movement seems to lessen the pain). I stiffen up at night and use support when I get out of bed and am out for an extended period of time. I am in my 79th year, so age may be a factor in my recovery. If you are much younger and have good strength, your recovery may be much faster than mine. I wish you success with the surgery and a full (and quick) recovery!

Spinal blocks are a godsend!

I've had over 6 and although they are painful, they made my life bearable.

Thank you for your responses. I don't have MS related leg pain, just pain from needing to replace my bone on bone lateral knee! Lucky that my legs are still pretty strong as I'm still able to workout. Ortho surgeon is being very responsive to MS related issues, so I'm very encouraged after my visit with him today.

Hi - I'm sorry you need to have a total knee replacement. I had one last summer and am having a slow recovery despite doing everything "right." I was told that spinal anesthesia is contraindicated in MS patients, that we need to have general. That's what I had. Check again with your doctor. Best of luck!
