help with assistive devices

Does anyone know where or how I can get a cane or walker for no cost? My insurance won't be effective until December 1st, then I have to make an appointment with my PCP and get her to make a referral and submit it to my insurance before it can be approved. That will take a while, and I don't have a while to wait right now. Until my SSDI/SSI is approved, I will have to go somewhere that won't accommodate my limitations, until I can get into an adult apartment community or some place where they can. Thanks in advance! :-)

Try your local MS center. We have one here and it has helped me get equipment and a cooling best. A couple years running, the Elks club was giving away air conditioners. If all fails, follow Kenu advice and call MSAA

Yes, Bamfan1442 , as Kenu said, we do have a national Equipment Distribution program available for the MS community that could help. Here is the link for more info:

Thank you everyone for your responses! I am in a shelter right now and my discharge date is in a few days. So I will have to go to another shelter in a different area nothing available here. Until I can get a real permanent street address no places will deliver anything to me and now I have to go somewhere else. I can't be in another shelter. Too much chaos, noise, screaming, bickering and stress making me feel more fatigue and pain along with a bad cold. Until my disability is approved I will remain homeless with no place to rest and recover from this. I am feeling hopeless. I will either die from being outside in the elements or have a heart attack from the stress in a shelter environment. I can't live like this anymore I'm done! 😫😠

Hang in there and pray a lot. Go to the new shelter it may not be as bad. Pray to the Lord to take away the crazy ness and ask for serinty in your life. 🙏🙏🙏❤️Ken

Thanks so much Ken! My apologies to everyone for the rant there. I have been feeling quite hopeless lately. God knows I have prayed, cried and thrown one too many pity parties recently! I realize that my health and keeping my appointments is most important thing right now. I've let things go because of all the stress and chaos going on. I'm getting a 2nd opinion from a different neuro cuz I'm not sure if I agree with his diagnosis back in October. Thanks again for your care and support! ❤

@bamfan1442 My heart goes out to you. That’s a tough spot to be in. I live in Massachusetts and in our state there is an organization which shuttles used assistive devices between people who know longer need them and those who do want them. It is called re-equipment. I imagine there is an analogous organization in your state? Since you do not have a permanent residence at this time, to arrange for delivery, I would recommend letting the shelter know of your need and seeing if they can’t arrange to meet that need. The Council on aging or local “senior centers” as they are often called, usually have closets full of these items that you can borrow. Best wishes for a speedy resolution and, above all, sending prayers for God‘s peace in the middle of your trials. Let us know how you are doing please.
