Ptosis Surgery

I went for my annual medical exam and complained that my I was struggling with my sight. My eye sight had not changed, but my eyelids were drooping and covering my eyeball. I am scheduled for surgery and wondered if anyone else has had this surgery and your results.

I know that at my next eye exam they want to tape my eyelids up to get a better idea of what's causing some of my vision issues.

I haven't but was told I may have. Than another doc, who measured my eyelids, said they were the same. Which made no sense to me. I guess when they get too droopy. I will be back complaining. Keep us posted on your surgery Sue AB.

SueAB , yes, I had to have this done about five years ago. For me it seemed to happen really quickly - the muscles/tendons that hold the upper lids open just sort of stopped doing their job. The muscles in my forehead were exhausted from trying to take over the job of holding my eyes open. This is not the same thing as having too much skin interfering with vision, it's the tendon that attaches to the muscle that needs to be tightened from inside. It was described as if the eyelid is a window shade and the tendon is the cord that raises it up and down and has no tension anymore so can't work properly - it's gotten stretched out and weak. They usually fix this by making an incision in the upper eyelid crease, and tighten or shorten the tendon. It's a delicate surgery and critical to have a very experienced oculoplastic surgeon that does a ton of these perform it. Try to see photos of their results if possible.

You will be awake during the surgery as they will need your cooperation to judge when they have it shortened to the correct level and so the eyes will be even. I was a difficult case and ended up needing a revision on my right eye, but I have other medical conditions that probably made it more challenging. My final results were successful, my profile picture is the "after." If I can find a before pic I'll post it later. I was also a "fast metabolizer" of the local anesthesia and they had to inject more several times. Be sure to speak up if it starts to wear off. Most people do just fine with this as well, but the local just didn't work for me. (My sister-in-law breezed through without issue). Are you in the U.K. or U.S.? In the U.S. you want an oculoplastic surgeon with ASOPRS certification, meaning they have had two additional years of fellowship training in eyelid surgery beyond their ophthalmology training and board certification.

I wish you the very best of luck and hope you'll let us know how it goes. It will be a big relief for you to have this repaired.

Hi SueAB ..let us know how it goes! I have an evaluation for this in October. I've been approved for the surgery before but chickened out. It's gotten worse so I need to just make myself go through with it.

I was supposed to have that surgery but my dry eyes got much drier, not producing tears or oil. Put me on restates, but allergic (as I am to everything it seems) do surgery was not an option because would make dry eyes much worse. On Xiidra now. Maybe it will help.

Thanks for all the info dianekjs and everyone. Am having problems with my eyes and have been told that I have droopy eyelids. They just don't open enough but I've never heard of this particular thing. I'm starting on the path with the dermatologist and I have a neurophthalmologist, so we'll see where it goes from here. Good luck, keep us posted. thanks.
