Has anyone had surgery with MS?

I am having a procedure in June and i am afraid the stress on my body will cause a relapse.

Hi Midgey_Midge06 ! I had an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. It did not cause a relapse. However, I had a problem coming out of the anesthesia but don't know if it was my M.S. or if they gave me too much. I've had trouble with the nitreous oxide anesthetic at the dentist too so maybe they all are just giving me too much.

Phew. Thank you. I feel better. I am not worried about the surgery but about the recovery.

I have had 5 ops since the ms dx, but I have PPMS so I dont know about the relapse. I just felt alittle more tired but I enjoyed the rest. Hope all goes well Midgey_Midge06 blessings Jimeka 🦋 🌈 🙏

I'll be praying that all goes well. I read somewhere that anesthesia has little effect on MS. Let us know how you are doing.

@Midgey_Midge06, I have SPMS. I had surgery some years ago, and though I didn't have relapses, the MS symptoms were quite a bit worse for maybe a year afterwards. I was told that I had to be on a ventilator for a while after the surgery because they ran into a problem with my breathing--but it apparently cleared up because I never heard any more about that problem. The surgery was to remove a parotid gland.

I've had several surgeries post MonSter dx and have never had a problem... I always ask the anesthesiologist to put me wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out... I never wanted to wake up I the middle of it, and always felt better when I woke up as the pain was gone...

I totally have that same fear! To wake up while they are working on me! I have had surgeries before the dx and have worried about that.

all of my surgeries have been post-MS... honestly, I don't think it had any impact... don't worry... it only brings you more worry...

I've received a new elbow, ACL, and a bladder stimulator. I've had no MS-related problems following any of these surgeries. Praying all goes well with yours. Let us know when you're scheduled. 💕

I am scheduled for June 14th. Its a chest reduction (to put it delicately) i am looking forward to the relief of back pain so i do have a positive attitude going in. Lets hope it carries me threw

I've had friends who have successful had that surgery Midgey_Midge06 . I'll be praying for your surgery on the 14th and that you notice a remarkable change in stature and pain following your recovery. You might feel new aches and pains with your new way of walkin and holding yourself up. My best to you. 💕

Midgey_Midge06 I had Deep brain stimulation surgery after my PPMS dx. That surgery was done mostly under local anesthetic because I had to be awake to show neuros. my responses as they tried to reduce my tremor. Only at the end did they put me to sleep to "close up and clean up". It did not seem to effect my MS. It took awhile to recover, but that is to be expected. I hope your surgery goes well. Keep us posted. Just don't try to do too much too fast!

Midgey_Midge06, it's Fancy1959. Yes I had major surgery in November 2015. I had liver reduction surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and I was in the hospital in Cleveland for 9 days. I can't say that was fun with the MS but within 3 to 4 days after surgery I started to make a dramatic improvement as related to the MS. The first several days my MS was very tough though. I don't think I could count mine as a relapse as much as a short term exacerbation. It was really bad only the first three days post-surgery then it started to improve rapidly. The liver reduction surgery was a fairly major surgery having to do with a rare genetic disease I have, Polycystic Liver Disease. Aren't I lucky to find both things in the same body. Aren't genetics a wonderful thing!

Genetics really are peachy! In my family i am the only one with MS (and that is going back humdreds of years on both sides) but i did inherit my overly large chest from my dads side. Hoping the reduction helps with the wonderfully named ms hug 😁
