going to start pt next week it has been several years since I have any pt. looking forward to it going to be fun. The one part I hate about MS is missing my three miles run I used to do. I do exercise at home never hurts to do more.

As an avid runner myself, I can relate to your missing those daily 3 miles. Curious what u (and others) do to maintain fitness?

I hope PT goes well!

What's fitness erash ? Joking :) lm lucky to walk to the end of the block. Without my leg giving out. Grrr But l would try to take that extra 2 or 3 steps everyday. Now that it's to cold out, I try to just walk more in the house. And helped the bf with stacking wood, and clearing the yard up. Since the upstairs neighbors are jerks and won't help. Grrrrr :/

Jesmcd2 funny, 1 of the exercises I do with my trainer is called "chopping wood" A pulley exercise to work the core.

So when u said helping stack wood, that's what I thought of.

Functional exercises that replicate what's needed in day to day stuff is great!

When I'm really fatigued, brushing my teeth can be tiring 😬

Yeah would be good erash except that lm not really supposed to pick up more than 5lbs and my back can freeze up doing things like that. But l wasnt going to let him do it by himself. :)

Be careful! 😐

in reply toJesmcd2

I understand about the walking I use a walker most days when I leave the house. Most of my exercise I set in a wheel chair

in reply toerash

I do wheel chair push ups walk.i have 5 lbs ankle weights I wear when doing leg lifts just try to keep busy. I am use a walker and on my good days I use my cane.

Yes, please start slow. PT made my brother and I worse so they sent us home and told us to pace ourselves and just walk a little throughout the day instead of cramming everything in an hour or half hour. It would take 4-5 days to recover from 1 day of therapy...we weren't even doing much! Lol! I'm an ex-power lifter, I had a fluke back injury a month before my first Highland games. Eventually(10yrs) led to Ms DX! It looks like my first symptom was at age 14 after freshman baseball practice.

That's why l dont and won't do PT any more Kevin_McMillan l gave it 3 different times and 3 different places, 3 different bad experiences. Nope never again.

I'm sorry about your back. What happened? If you don't mind me asking.

Kevin_McMillan profile image
Kevin_McMillan in reply toJesmcd2

When I was 20 I was working at Les Schwab tires and I was lifting tractor tires into a semi trailer to go to recycle. When I was done my back felt weird, up between the shoulder blades so I went to take a break. Nope, Boss had me change small truck tires, I picked up a tire to mount it and back gave out. 5 years of clueless doctors, I ended up seeing a guy in Portland, he saw me walk down the hall and knew it was a thoracic! He sent me in and had an mri to see which one, it was T5-6 and 6-7.

Kevin_McMillan How's it going? Ready for the holidays?

I'm really sorry about your back! It amazes me how something we do every day, can just stop us in our tracks. I can't believe that it took 5 YEARS to figure out what was wrong with your back. They had mine figured out in a wk, and in for emergency surgery -_- By then the damage was done. But 5 yrs? You don't complain much do you? :)

Hope your doing well and hanging in there!

Jes ♡

Kevin_McMillan profile image
Kevin_McMillan in reply toJesmcd2

Jesmcd2 I don't complain much but I was in complete disbelief at these doctors incompetence. The insurance sent me to their doctors in another town and he told them something mechanical was wrong with my back, they sent me to another doctor 2 weeks later because that doctor didn't lie for them and they were upset. The next doctors lied and said nothing was wrong.

I'm sorry about your back, I'm glad you got right in to have the surgery. I know you are never the same but sooner the better.

I hope you are ready for the Holidays, I hope they are joyful and festive!

Kevin_McMillan profile image
Kevin_McMillan in reply toJesmcd2

Jesmcd2, I'm sorry, I haven't been typing much. So this surgeon had me in for surgery 2 weeks later to do a double laminectomy, one was pressing on a nerve and the other on the cord. He said eventually I would have been in a wheelchair. He was angry at the other 7 doctors I had been to. So that injury is why I'm having trouble getting SSDI I lost 5 years of work history. Law states I was unable to work before age 21 then my credits start when I become able to work again. At age 29 I was working at a polymer plant where I was cleaning a system out from processing latex for housing paint. I had a 3 inch nylon braided rubber hose in one hand and I lifted an in house sump grate, to put the end of the hose in and flush with fresh water. Sump grate=45lbs, hose with brass cam lock end is 20lbs. The Sump grate was stuck a little frolowm the dried polymer, I yanked up on it and I felt a weird thump and shift in my low back. Excruciating pain and heat moved down my low back, butt and legs as I fell to my knees! I ruptured 2 disks, after 18 months of bad Doctors and insurance where's I found a good Doctor that fused my back but then I go3c b,😁t Staphylococcus(2 rare strains) so I had to wait for the antibiotics. I had a pic line for 7 weeks and I had to get opened back up, flushed and drained. I was told the outcome would be diminished. I forgot to mention I had morphine overdose the day after surgery. Workers comp removed me from my Dr's care and I had it find any one. He eventually gave in and released me for light duty work 3-4 hours a day. I settled for a joke and got worse 6 months later, the typical. I had a spine stimulator implant that aggrevated my symptoms and even brought back an old one. I told my PCP I think I had MS, he asked why so I told him about the stimulator. He ordered an mri at their clinic in the next town, they were terrible...benign. he suddenly he retired. Our new young dr. Took over and he looked at it when I complained of vision trouble and tingle, right are weakness. Anyway, 2 1/2yrs to get dx'd! 4 doctors later!

Kevin_McMillan WOW!! You have been through the ringer😞 l am so sorry, that it took so long to get you fixed up. Sometimes DR's are just dumb😁 Personally l like proving them wrong, ever chance l can😅

I have to say you have a lot more patience's than l do. When my Dr called me and told me that l had to be at the hospital in an hr, l told him no! I would call him back in an hr and hung up on him!😁 He was not a happy camper lol but really didn't care. I was a single mom with 3girls they came 1st..💕

So far so good with the holidays, hope yours are going well also

Jesmcd2, that is ridiculous! An hour? That is funny you hung up on the Dr, he deserved it though! Kids always come first! 😊That must have been hard being a single mother of 3!

I did scare a Dr out of an exam room once before my last back surgery, he told me to put down my cane and stand up straight then walk normal for him! 😠

I'm Glad your Holidays are going good!! Mine not so much, just not feeling good but it will pass.

Eh Kevin_McMillan l should have also should mention that my Dr said something about a specialist, and emergency. But DR's can't know everything we are thinking, or dealing with. Sometimes they need a wake call. Just so they listen. And answer our questions.😕

Sorry your not feeling very good, and l hope you feel better soon.

Jesmcd2 the Dr's don't need to know everything you're thinking! These Dr's can always use a wake up call, their arrogant butt won't listen to a patient.

Thank you Jesse, I don't know what's going on? Maybe falling off a little?

Jesmcd2 I really appreciate your concern, I think I might have disease progression going on here. If it is a flare up then it is a very long one! 🙄 I'm taking it easy and helping with what I can to decorate the house. I had nasty vertigo today and had to go to bed all afternoon! I had things I wanted to get done. 😐

I hope you are doing well and Jolly! All ready for Santa? Have you been good this year?😉

Well Jesmcd2 if you knew my neuro you would feel the same as me....WHY? 😄I wait until I'm worse than this and the last time I had solumedrol it wasn't very effective. I do have an appointment with my Neurologists in a couple weeks, I'm hoping to make it until then. 😉

That's nice you already had one Christmas, I'm looking forward to our Christmas eve' gathering.

Yes, being good is relative! How relative were you? 😋

Kevin_McMillan isn't there something else they can give you? I remember hmmm l think it was Sukie427 that uses it? I could be wrong. And maybe time for a new Neuro. You shouldn't wait tho.

And have to say in a relatively long relationship. So that has calmed me down. And ever since l got this thing in my brain, l can't drink anymore. 😢😢😥😥 Wow do l have to act like a grown up now? That's gonna s*ck 😠

Enjoy your holidays with your family and friends 🎄

Relationships tend to mellow you a little bit, of course not drinking.... I'm married with child and don't drink, my MS is Chronic! I'm a bundle of fun! Haha...

You have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Enjoy your Family and Friends!

I have been to OHSU that was something! They sent me across Portland,OR for EMG, Eugene for another test and another city for an MRI. I asked, don't you do all of that here? Yes but not good. The Dr was a mess nothing was getting scheduled so I left and went to Providence st Vincent MS clinic. They are way behind the times! My Dr. Friend back east knows an MS researcher in Ohio that knows Cohan (department Head) @ Providence, he is behind too, too many patience. My Dr was sure she saw a lesion on my cousin, the director agreed but the radiologist said artifact so they blew it off. Shouldn't the specialist have a better grip on it? My surgeons never trusted the radiologists! The board didn't feel I had enough lesions so my Dr sent my for a second opinion to Seattle. I went to a new clinic out in Issaquah at the Swedish Hospital. They showed 3x the lesions and with that exam the Dr recommended my Dr DX me. When I got back to Portland and discussed the appointment and went over the papers I had, She Dx'd me may, 2012. 3 years and 4 doctors later not including the live in work hardening program Workers Comp sent me to in 2006 with 3 different specialists, 3 different types of therapists, psychologist, psychiatrist, and I got kicked out early because I got worse. I knew it was serious when some of us went hot tubbing and I went paralyzed from the belly button down. Looking back my first episode was freshman baseball practice, the left side of my body went numb with burning and heavy tingling. Right side was normal.

I'm glad you are spending christmas with you Grand kids, that is irreplaceable time spent over the Holidays!

Thank you for the information, I will see if I can find a good Neurologist between now and the first of the year.

Enjoy those young ones!

I am so sorry Kevin_McMillan l hear that alot on here. The horror stories about Drs. We should get our Neuros on this site so they can see and feel the distraction we all feel in being tossed around. I understand that having a DX of MS is hard as so many things mimic it. But geese if it's undeniable then just say it already! I'm pretty sure the 1st Neuro l saw will take more time with his next patients after me. And lm pretty sure his nurse and reseptionist quit by the time l got done with them.😠 😕😁 Try and tell me Botox will fix me again you sob and see what happens.! 😠 Sry got carried away. Lol

My grandbabes are amazing 💕 and they LOVE calling and telling on their moms! Lol One is 7 now the other will be 7 on the 28th. I see nerf gun rights in our future tonight 😁😅😅

Thank you Jesmcd2, wouldn't that be great to get all of those quacks on here! I think that is hilarious you ripped into the first Dr and their office. That botox is the new fix all now by the clueless, gives them another way to fill their pockckets too. No need to apologize, I have my moments!

7 is a great age! My son is 9, he still loves the nerve guns and packs them around all Summer.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Kevin_McMillan ! And l think this would be a great resource for our Neuros to see and actually understand what we go through on a day to day basis. Maybe it would give them more insight to what we DONT tell them compared to what we do.

As far as that other quack goes, well it probably didn't help l was already into a bottle of cherry shnanpps however it's spelled lol. But they never called again. WIN! I think what ticked me off the most was an arthritis Dr was the one that actually caught the MS, now seriously? Duke Dr needs Botox were the sun don't shine. I'm pretty sure l said that to. Oy vey. My temper sometimes. Lol but when lm right lm right!

I'm finding that pacing myself is really important. I can imagine that MS can be an obstacle in therapy reaching their short 30 min) and long term goals (insurance dictated # of sessions).

Kevin_McMillan profile image

I have to do mine through out the day. I can't stuff it in a half hour! I do my own so I can do other things (function) during the day. I have a car I'm restoring, I didn't paint it but trying to assemble the interior etc.. it is challenging to say the least, I'm falling off and Will need help. My dad was helping but passed away in the middle of it. It is amazing the muscles you use but it is good for the mind too. I think of my father and the great times we had together!

In the summer I try to exercise in the pool as often as I can. It is funny how much better my bad leg works. In the colder months I walk or use a stationary bike at the fitness center. I find being around people helps my mood and encourages me to exercise. I don't exercise two days in a row otherwise I need to completely rest for two or three days. Two of the PT's i went to last year suggested that I work for five minutes and rest for five minutes. It works well for me.

I am just finishing a round of PT, and you're right, it was fun! I have PPMS and there was not a lot I could do except stay healthy (no meds. etc.). The PT not only helped me physically, but mentally as well, as it was something I could be proactive about and feel like I had some control back in my life.

I never used to be athletic at all, save for occasional surfing but I feel the same way re my pt! I like anything that gives me reason to laugh at myself! Who in the world employs another person to teach them to walk!?

erash profile image
erash in reply toAmN1n0

AmN1n0 actually, a lot of people (stroke survivors, new amputees, post hip fractures) employ others to help them walk or PTs would be out of work 😉

But I get you @amn1n0. How many people trip over perfectly paved walkways? Or look like their in a pinball machine as the bounce off the walls of a hallway 😜

Jesmcd2 profile image

Lol AmN1n0 your right. I really don't need someone to tell me to walk or teach me how to. According to my mom, l have been doing it since l was 1. So lm pretty good at it. Til l fall hahaha

I do have a friend that will walk with me, but she just had surgery so it's going to be a bit. And now the snow? Nope not going :D

This is back when I was still going to the gym and doing weights. My disease was progressing so the doctor sent me in for PT in the pool, I told her last time I was in a pool I didn't do well. She told me to go try one out before she orders PT so I did. Just standing in the pool makes my legs week.

Enjoy the PT and hopefully you can gain from the experience. Are you on Medicare disability? If you are you might be eligible for Silver Sneakers Which allows you to go to exercise centers to work out. I finished 8 weeks of PT in Sept. and I did learn a few things. I also found that the sessions would tire me out. I do not go to the center to exercise anymore because I am afraid of tiring myself out.
