Neurologic based physical therapy

Hello fellow warriors. I want to spread the word about something that has been life changing for me. I have been battling secondary progressive multiple sclerosis for about three years now. I have felt like I have been literally trapped in my body with extreme fatigue, weakness, balance issues and you know, lots of other m.s related issues. I had been sent to traditional physical therapy about four months into this last flare up that led me to the diagnosis of secondaryprogressive multiple sclerosis. That was just a disaster. My muscles were still strong and toned from my job as a letter carrier. Well a new ,for me,neurologist recommended physical therapy for me at a facility that specializes in Neuro based physical therapy. After a quick assessment my pt started giving me some small exercises and core strengthening stretches and poses. It has been like a miracle for me! This therapy has opened neural pathways in my brain leading me to a huge turn around for me. One exercise retrained my brain to walk on my heels rather than on my toes as she had observed. After less than a month I feel like I have a renewed sense of hope. I an walking with so much less difficulty, stairs are not too bad at all, my fatigue has lessened tremendously. I'm starting to make a list of all of the things that over the last three years I had to accept I would never be able to do again, or ever. I feel like I have a second chance at life. I urge you all to ask your Neuro about that type of pt. If they havnt heard of it, urge them to do some research for you. I had been asking my regular Neuro for over two years if there was any kind of pt that might help me now. Always getting a no. Well , I needed to get a new Neuro so I could get prescribed Ocrevus at a different facility because my regular one doesn't buy that medication. It is this new Neuro that referred me to this kind of pt. I feel like it is like I've suddenly been plugged back in. I urge one and all with balance and weakness issues to inquire about it. It's like it's opening neural pathways tapping into brain reserves I thought I had run out of. Never give up my warrior friends!

very interesting. thank you for sharing. I agree that our brain probably has a lot of resources, and redundancy that we need to learn to activate and use.

Glad to hear that you're getting better.

we have a neuro pt here in Illinois that I go to and yes you can tell the difference. People come to it from around the world. They have the inpatient, outpatient and the pt.

Ty!! I knew this had to be a thing! I have a theory that we should be rehabbing long before we are “bad enough” to earn a rehab referral...but as you say, neuro rehab is totally different. I use to begin spine rehab in the hospital and then they went off to Atlanta for intense retraining. MS doesn’t get all that though. We are told to sit, be careful, meditate (not a bad idea), and do some yoga (also not a bad idea).

I wonder where your body would be now if you had started 2 years ago 🤔 What is the name of the place you are going to?

I totally agree, I do wonder where I would be if my Neuro had known about this and had referred me there years ago! I have hope again. We all know how important that is for our state of mental health. I now feel again that I have the tools I need to fight this stinking disease!

I had a look at the website of the people you are going to and while there was rather limited information there I'm guessing that what you are being given PT-wise is probably very similar to the type of exercises that Trevor Wicken and his online MS Gym work with - I believe he does a lot of stuff relating to neuro-plasticity and neural pathways. For people who don't have access to specialist neuro-physios (or any decent physio for that matter) his paid subscription service would be a whole heap better than nothing, and even those who do have access would no doubt find it cheaper than going to any physio. There are a few members here who subscribe to his online MS Gym - maybe they could post a comment or two.

Even allowing for Trevor's totally over-the-top self-hyping publicity it seems that many PwMS do get a lot of benefit from his site and exercise programs.

The MS Gym with Trevor Wicken is a great program. His exercises and the verbal cues he gives are so much better than regular physical therapy exercises.

I find myself using his BGB (butt, guts, blades) mantra as I go about my day. My posture, strength, and ability to move are improving. He is definitely worth checking out if you want to activate new neural pathways to improve your mobility. MS Gym.com
