Bleeding under the skin.

I have a problem mainly with my legs although it’s starting on my arms now. It seemed to start not long after I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism but don’t know if that actually has anything to do with it. I get almost constant bleeding under the skin and and the skin tears like wet tissue paper. Has anyone any idea what this is and what can cause it?

Hi Very sorry to hear this. Must be distressing. I would certainly see a medical doctor about it first.

I actually saw a dermatologist about 3 years ago…he told me to rub cream in 8-10 times a day and wear shin pads…not very practical. I’m having bloods done on Thursday because it’s getting so much worse, the doctor thinks it ‘may’ be vasculitis, but after looking at pictures of it I’m not convinced. Luckily it’s not painful, it worries my husband more than it worries me.

It seems internal from some cause if it is also appearing on arms. Good luck with the tests and hopefully they will diagnose it properly. In my experience, you have to persevere with doctors to get to the correct diagnosis. In the meantime, if you know a good homoeopath, you can try them. Nothing to lose. Sometimes when you have very specific symptoms, they are very good at treating them.

It certainly does not look good and there could be at least 10 reasons (if not hundreds). So, doing various blood test should narrow down the options. Platelet levels in your blood should be the obvious area to inspect. Immune disorders such as lupus or thrombocytopenia need to be explored along with any possible infection. Hopefully a correct diagnosis will be made and you'll be treated accordingly.

Thanks for your reply. I’m hoping that bloods can tell me something but having been here before I’m not holding my breath…they seem to lose interest unless the results scream at them 🤔

Hi,how did you go on with the bleeding under skin on legs .🤔

Hi maryemma, bloods came back fine. Have spoken to a Haematologist who couldn’t understand why I’d been referred to him…he said I should be seeing a Dermatologist…I completely agree with him, I’m now waiting for a dermatology app. One thing he did suggest was stopping Naproxen/Ibuprofen…that made a huge difference, along with rubbing St Johns Wort oil on them every day…my legs now look so much better, just need to find a way to make the scars fade 🤔

Hi,Thanks for replying ,mine look something like yours ,because I have thin skin and the slightest knock makes it bleed under the skin.I use Aveeno cream morning and night to keep skin less super dry. For scars use bio oil, it worked. Unfortunately I fell on my knees and have bad scars and at the bottom of my leg the cut made a hemotoba ,sorry wrong spelling ,a cut and lump, that took ages to heel and left a brown stain on my leg ,been 18 months now so it wont go now. Please keep in touch .

I started to have this problem 2 years ago on my forearms even taking a plaster off caused a massive bleed, i'm now 70 and have had various phone consultations one with a haematologist who said aging, sun damage and not anything they can do. I have recently actually managed to get a face to face consultation with a Doctor at my GP practice and have also had more blood tests waiting for results, the Dr. mainly says the same as before and is not sure what causes it and it's problem that i will have to live with. Banging my head against a brick wall comes to mind.

Hi Bogle, mine started when I started with Hypothyroidism but has gradually got worse. Like you I can’t use plasters anymore as I get huge bleeds under the skin…also taking the plaster off, even very slowly and carefully tears the skin off. Hopefully by not taking Ibuprofen/Naproxen any more and rubbing in St John’s Wort daily they’ll carry on improving…I live in hope 🤞🏼

Hi again, what is Hypothyroidism 🤔

Mary Emma, An underactive thyroid is where your thyroid gland (a small gland in your neck) does not produce enough hormones, so we have to take daily tablets for the rest of our lives.

Of course ,I had only heard it called under or over active thyroid before

Hi,my blood test said I have borderline thyriod, funny as you just said about it.don’t need any tablets yet ,have it done again in 6 months, everything else was fine ,liver kidneys, heart etc. but the nurse was worried as my arm started the bleed under skin at once as she but the band round, she used my candy, and booked me an appointment with the doctor ,who asked lots of questions and pressed very hard on my stomach ,said it was just the thin skin ,arms are was,the sterioid creams and inhalers for my asthma.and book another blood test for clotting.best week.

Hi,Good Luck with that 🤗 I remember the photo you put on first. My legs are always bleeding under the skin and since 6 years ago when I had cellulitis them are very very tender to touch ,even if I knock one turning over in bed.I was told my playlets were within the normal range. In my recent blood test my blood was slightly longer to clot,so my doc wrote to the dermatologist and I have an appointment in November .xxx
