Have you ever heard someone say "I'm so OCD!!" or maybe you've heard, "I'm a little OCD too, I like to keep my things super organized".

We know it can be difficult for members of the OCD and related disorders community to hear the term OCD misused. People who use OCD as a joke belittle the disorder and contribute to a stigma that prevents many people from seeking treatment. The good news is that together, we can work to educate the public, make a change, and reduce the time it takes for people to get the help they need.

Visit our Real OCD Resource Center page, linked below, to learn how YOU can respond to and educate others on the realities of OCD, whether it's a friend, or a celebrity on social media.

Thank you, Beth, for this post. I have not had much experience with people saying things like that to me, but one day my brother (who had no idea he was being insulting) made a joke about something I had just done that had been OCD related. I was surprised he had said what he did and also surprised how I mentally reacted to his comment. I was offended for the 1st time.

Now that you have posted this, I see that it has become more of a reality to me to hear that words like, "I need things really organized"... are words that really do hurt, and I now know how unfair it is for people in the OCD community to hear them!

I am so sorry to us all for having to put up with others' ignorance. xx

It is a little insulting.. more so annoying to me, but I honestly don't really care at the same time because it's ignorance and if they really knew what I struggle with, they'd probably be suuperr judgemental, so I'd rather them kind of be ignorant.

Thanks so much for this! People are better informed about OCD than they were (I had it for years without knowing what it was, that it's a recognized condition, and treatable - and I had a useless therapist who didn't tell me and kept asking me about my childhood) but too many still think it's about being neat and tidy.
