Hey there,

Unfortunately this is normal for OCD sufferers. Intrusive thoughts are nothing but thoughts and something everyone experiences, however for those of us with OCD we give the thoughts power and try to assign meaning to them. Try to just observe the thoughts and then let them pass. OCD is a liar and will continue to lie to you. Are you currently on any medication or seeing a specialist? Many people who suffer from this have brains that do not produce enough serotonin and that is why medication can be so helpful. I know how scary it can be. Take a deep breath and hang in there, and seek help if you haven’t already!

It's horrible it's making me think I will lose control and act on them I have had suicide thoughts for a little over 3 month now & I get thoughts of hurting others , it's the worst I wouldn't wish this on anyone! My doctor told me it's common in ocd to have nasty intrusive thoughts! I don't take meds for it none have worked! I have just finished CBT for worry and I have to go back for a little bit more help xx

I am glad you are getting treatment! I wouldn’t give up on finding the right medication for yourself, I know many people who have had to go through trial and error a dozen times. Just remind yourself that these are just thoughts and the good thing about OCD is that it is ego dystonic, which means it’s the opposite of who you are. So in a weird way, having thoughts about harming yourself or others just shows how much you care about other people and that your are a compassionate person. And above all, a thought is just a thought and nothing more. Also one more tidbit of reassurance is that studies show people with intrusive thoughts and OCD are actually less likely than the average person to harm. Hope this helps you!

Yes, that is absolutely normal! OCD wants you to think you will lose control and lash out and it feeds off of your fear. Try your best to not assign too much meaning to those thoughts. When a thought about losing control comes into your mind don’t try to argue with it, instead try saying “that would be interesting” or “that would suck” (I like this one and someone on here actually recommended it to me). You can do this!

You need to see a doctor about medication. I take Ativan and Zoloft. They help when nothing else did. Talking about it with a doctor can help but without med to balance the chemicals in your brain you will be anxious and have those thoughts.

Hi tha is for your reply I have taken meds be for but had horrible time with them so now am scared, I have good days and bad days with my thoughts. I try my best to deal with them when they do come some times they just pass with in a few hours sometimes it takes a day or 2 for them to subside.
