-Advice on streaming eyes

Hello, I'm looking for advice/suggestions. My sister (69) has MSA , she was finally diagnosed about 2 years ago but had symptoms for a few years before that . She is now confined to bed in a nursing home. Her movement is very restricted. The issue I want advice on is, her eyes are constantly streaming red and causing irritation, we have tried several over the counter drops and sprays. Any advice please if you have had similar experiences

Thank you.

Hi there!

I haven't heard of this being a symptom of MSA before - so maybe it is something unrelated? Maybe she is allergic to something? It might be worth talking to her GP to ask? Just a thought!!!

Thank you for reply. Eye condition is caused by reduced blinking in patients with MSA. This may not be a common symptom, it is obvious from reading all the posts on here how MSA impacts everyone differently. Her GP has prescribed eye drops, sprays. Just wanted to check if anyone else had similar experiences, and maybe found something that works.

My mum experienced this too. They can get infected easily so the GP should be checking them and prescribing antibiotic drops if needed. Using tissues to wipe the eyes can also make them sore, cotton hankies or muslins can help with this.

Thank you for your advice. She has antibiotic drops but say they sting her eyes and will then refuse to take them. Changing from tissues and wipes to cotton or muslin should help ... being in a nursing home it can be challenging to get consistent level of care. Thank you.

Yes - I can appreciate the care challenges, we had a lot of that with mum too sadly. It's very hard to get them to appreciate the unpredictability of MSA. Do you have any support from a local hospice?
