Probiotics interacting with our drugs?

This has been discussed here before (about 4 years ago) but no clear conclusions/advice.

Does anyone know the latest thinking, is there any risk that say Symprove (which a lot of us take) could lessen the efficacy of Pegasys, HU or Ruxo?

i have been taking Symprove since I was diagnosed with E.T over thirteen years ago it has been very beneficial to me, plus all my bloods for the last few years have been very stable, my Haematologist is more than happy for me to take, I have 500 mg Mon-Wed and a 1,000 mg Thursday-Sun, of Hydroxycarbamide and 75mg EC Aspirin daily my one problem is my Ferritin levels are a tad high, but she has said it is to do with my Thyroid playing up and so my Thyroxine has been increased. As far as I am concerned it had been very beneficial to me over the years especially as I have suffered with IBS and a gastroenterologist recommended that I take.

I have been taking a daily probiotic along with Besremi. I started when I was on hydroxyurea, which compromised my GI system., My MPN care team is aware of it and has no problem with taking a probiotic.

While I am not aware of any clear evidence to support the use of probiotics with MPNs, it seems like a logical choice to support the GI microbiome which plays a critical role in inflammation and the immune system. Taking a probiotic alone is not enough though. You also need to eat a healthy diet, including fiber and prebiotics. Suggest you consult a knowledgeable medical provider regarding the role you GI system plays with the MPN and your overall health. Integrative and Functional Medicine doctors are particularly good at this.

Wishing you all the best.

I take probiotics . Approved also by Guys. The trouble with supplements is not enough research done and anecdotal evidence is greeted with sceptical by some .

That's one of the reasons why it's important to see a functional dr, as Hunter said

The only way to answer your question definitively would be a series of clinical trials - and I cannot see any business or institution having the will or the resources to fund that, unfortunately.

While, generally, some probiotics are well tolerated, one needs to recommend them with caution in vulnerable people.

Because they are not without consequences and one needs a decently functioning immune system while taking probiotics. Not everyone with an MPN has a decently functioning immunity, either due to the illness itself, or due to the medication used to treat the MPN.

Also, from what I could see, most probiotics do not do much. There are some that have some small effects, most of them do little. So you need a specialist who can choose a probiotic known to work.

Another reason why it's important to see a functional dr./integrative.They are able to advise on what is most suitable for an individual.

I would stick to regular specialists, my hematologist and a gastroenterologists for this, and my GP coordinates well my care. In most Europe, functional/integrative doctors are not something that inspires trust or is even recognised professionally.

I have taken probiotics for ever and Rux seven years, no probs, I have never heard or read of it being an issue, in view of the fact Rux and Peg and Hydroxy can for some have GI issues a probiotic would seem a good add on but that’s just my view with little science behind it, maybe one for your Haem expert

I have been doing probiotics since my diagnosis seven years ago. It is so important to take only live bacteria because the other ones are almost useless. Unfortunately, most of the other ones are dead bacteria or bacteria that were live at time of production which means the most probably did it..

I am in Austria and take Omni biotic 6 I took them in the beginning morning and night on an empty stomach. After that I changed it to another company I don't remember which one with a different kind of intestinal bacteria. Then I took a break for about a month did Omni biotic six again and switched again to another company.

the most important thing is to take the bacteria as a powder, put it in a glass of lukewarm water and let it sit for 15 minutes or even longer so that the bacteria can't multiply. This way you expand the amount of bacteria you're taking.

Also important is to take different kinds of bacteria and not just one company for years. our body needs thousands of different who is in order to work well. That's when we come to pre-biotics which is eating foods that actually help the bacteria's that we have to grow on their own

our western diet does not support intestinal bacteria and we need to take care of that
