The medication interaction of concern is between aspirin and other NSAIDs.
Avoid/Use Alternative aspirin + ibuprofen avoid aspirin >325 mg/day; otherwise, use alternative or monitor bleeding s/sx, renal fxn; may give low-dose aspirin at least 2-4h before or at least 8h after single ibuprofen 400 mg dose: combo may incr. risk of GI ulceration, perforation, bleeding (incl. life-threatening), renal impairment, other adverse effects; ibuprofen may inhibit cardioprotective effect of low-dose aspirin (additive effects; possible competition for platelet binding sites) epocrates.com/online/intera...
I have combined aspirin with several different NSAIDs under medical direction to treat osteoarthritis/tendonitis. Some level of potentiation of the aspirin is to be expected. You would need specific advice from your care team whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks of combining the meds in your case. What I found is that the NSAIDs were ineffective in treating the joint issues. On the advice of my rheumatologist, I tried using curcumin as an alternative. It worked better than any of the NSAIDs that I tried. While there are warnings about potentiation of the aspirin, I have never experienced it with curcumin. I later consulted with an Integrative Medicine doctor who made the same recommendation.
The pain from joint deterioration can be significant and needs to be addressed. It is worth taking some risks to address the issue; however, the risks need to be reasonable and outweighed by the benefits. You need advice and monitoring from medical providers in this case. Note that f you wish to consider complementary health interventions as I did, not all providers are familiar with these interventions and how they interact. Finding the right provider would be critical.
Wishing you all the best and success moving forward.
I have ET and rheumatoid arthritis plus osteo and degenerative spine I've take hydroxy in the past with antiflammatory plus a blood thinner. For me your warned about the risks but you need the benefits as well.
hi Modbury, aspirin can interact with NSAIDS: Ibuprofen or Diclofenac and you advised to check with your haematologist or clinical nurse specialist before you take them.
Hi Modbury . Yes advice has always been no ibuprofen, nurofen etc with hydroxy if you are also on Aspirin. I came out of hospital yesterday after hip replacement surgery and only have paracetamol, plus some Oromorph when needed. They would normally prescribe ibuprofen as part of the recovery programme, however being on hydroxy and now fragmin too, it is not advised. I hope this helps. Paracetamol is not the most effective we know, but unfortunately on this drug we are limited to what we can take.
