Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation is a potentially curative treatment
for advanced polycythemia vera (PV).
This procedure involves replacing defective stem cells with healthy ones from a donor. It's considered a last resort when other treatments have been ineffective, or if the patient has serious bone marrow scarring.
Before the transplant, the patient receives chemotherapy or radiation therapy to destroy diseased bone marrow. Complications can be serious, including organ damage and rejection of the stem cells by the body.
PV is a stem cell disorder that causes the body to produce too many red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A successful transplant replaces the stem cells where the disease originates, and the patient will no longer have symptoms
