Hello friends, I recently had myself a Stroke, the ambulance and emergency depth staff were exceptional at their jobs and I was only in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for 3 days. I'm home now with almost no signs that I had a stroke due to the Medical Staff doing such a great job. I immediately had my Hydroxycarbamide increased and my aspirin changed to Clopidogrel and now 4 weeks later my platelet count is 406. What happens now. Do I just continue taking the Hydroxycarbamide for the rest of my Life?

Glad to here your getting through your stroke with no I'll effects.Yes I would think it's HU now unless the side effects are bad.Hoping your seeing an MPN specialist to get the best care.Like you my platelet count is reasonably low (497) but I had bilateral pulmonary embolism. There doesn't appear to be a correlation of high platelets with clot incidents.
Keep moving, increase your fluid intake and eat lots of leafy veg
Sorry to hear about the stroke but glad to hear about the great care and positive outcome.
It is clear that cytoreduction will continue to be needed. Whether hydroxycarbamide is the best choice is something to discuss with a MPN Specialist. There are other options you can consider (e.g., Pegasys). You can also discuss how to structure your treatment goals, what risks you are willing to take or adverse effects you can tolerate. This will guide you decision.
Wishing you a full recovery and all the best moving forward.
That is remarkable how quick you have recovered the rie must have pulled out all the steps within three weeks my auntie is in the wgh since November and got a long long road ahead of her she also had a stroke to but she doesn't have an mpn and remarkable how quickly you were taken and treatment started as the rie is getting bad press for waiting timeSo you stay safe

Unless you develop an issue with the drug I would think so. It is an old drug, side effects well documented and relatively inexpensive. But certainly express any concerns you have with your doctors.
Hi Archie, I was prescribed Clopidogrel as a blood thinner to help the blood flow to my sore muscles. It helped significantly more than just aspirin. Good luck.
