Hi gang! Has anyone experienced thyroid issues while on Pegasys? I did some routine bloodwork this week and to my surprise my TSH levels (thyroid) was off the charts (I scored 14.5 units for TSH while normal range are 0.4 - 4.0 units).
While I've read that thyroid problems can be caused by Pegasys in rare cases, I also have a family history of lots of thyroid issues, both over and under active.
I'm just curious what this may mean for my beloved Pegasys!! I'm part of the Pegasys fan club and don't want to have to give it up! I feel like I just got into the groove with it.
I'm sure I'll hear more from my GP in the next week and then we'll consult my MPN specialist but just curious about others here if they're in the same boat.

Hypothyroidism is a well know side effect of interferon. It doesn’t mean you’ll have to stop Pegasys. You might just need some medication (levothyrox) to control your TSH level.
common with Peg but can be treated with thyroid meds so you keep on Peg, TSH at 14 is very high and needs treating, thyroid docs also tend to focus on Free T3 and 4 , TSH is only a rough guide, the good news is once thyroid is optimised you should feel better
Thank you - yes I was told there would be follow up testing. Getting that result was a big surprise but I instantly thought perhaps I'll feel even better once that is sorted! You've confirmed my hope. Thank you!
Hi. I think Hypothyroidism is often found in MPN patients regardless the drug they’re on. Patients have discussed other autoimmune diseases as well. My own was discovered 2 decades before my MPN developed. Best of luck. Katie
Good to know, thank you! My heart instantly sank seeing the result - "Don't take my darling Pegasys from me!!" 😱😂 Glad to hear this seems to be manageable alongside the MPN.
