Pegasys and Alcohol?

Ive read from many of you the importance of consuming a lot of water while on pegasys.

Curious for those of you who enjoy(ed) wine or other alcohol how that has or hasnt affected your ability to drink?

I’ve found nothing that says don’t mix alcohol and Interferon and I still have a lager or two 😉, without any issues, I now just have water in between (yes it’s that water again) as do need to avoid any possibility of becoming dehydrated.

I definitely can’t drink as much as I used to (probably no bad thing..!) but that started before I was on Pegasys, so I think it has more to do with my ET than medication...

The problem with Pegasys is the liver toxicity. As long as my transaminases are not elevated I feel free to drink a bit less water and a bit more alcohol 🍷

The MPN Voice leaflet on Interferons has some words of advice on water and alcohol.

Just checked. The Interferon leaflet is out of date with regards to the govt. recommended maximum number of units of alcohol per week. Its now 14 units per week for both men and women.

Well, the new recommendation to prevent cancer is... no alcohol at all

Very confusing.

In the same document tne WCRF recommends limiting alcohol and having no alcohol at all.

Its enough to make you want a drink!

In my opinion the message is clear. If you can’t refrain from drinking, keep drinking a small amount. If you want to maximize cancer prevention don’t drink at all.

Hooray to you for asking. The topic is always one of the elephants in the living room. I would guess some people would minimize alcohol use or just deny it. I have chosen to still enjoy a drink if I want to. My hematologist didn't comment but just nodded her head. I take Hydroxyurea for my ET JAK 2+. So far so good.

My grandfather used to tinkle the ice in his glass of scotch and say " Just because it's poisonous ☠️ doesn't mean it isn't medicine ".
