Low iron levels

Been on treatment for ET for some time now and I take 500mg HU and 1x4 of angralide..platelets around 350 to 480 . My haemoglobin levels are low and felt tired for several weeks .. I stressed this at my last meeting with the haemotology dept . Luckily they called me in and upshot is I'm anaemic and they've put me on ferrous sulphate tablets 3 a daySo hopefully this should work .. they told me this would be a roller coaster ride .

I'm surprised you aren't getting an iron infusion, which is a damn site quicker at bringing up your iron reserves, three tablets a day will probably just make your faeces black. Depending on strength. How anemic are you? If you are below 90 g/L you should be having a blood transfusion of packed RBCells. I emailed my wife's consultant on Thursday saying she was getting more tired as each day passes, and I thought her Hgb was getting low, he sent blood forms and she had a blood test on Monday and her Hgb was down to 87g/L she's now booked in for three bags of packed RBCells on Saturday morning.

I’ve just read your reply. When I was having a haemoglobin level of 93 they said it’s not until you are in the 80’s that they consider a pint of blood. Glad your wife got it.

That's right, it's written in stone somewhere, if below 90 which includes in the 80s then you should be having blood transfusion. Earlier this year she was at 56, but that was during a massive bleed.

I hope you will be ok with the iron tablets. I had horrible side effects which left me with inflammatory bowel disease. It didn’t even work so I ended up having an infusion which was much better. Keep an eye on how you are feeling. I had cramps, excessive wind, nausea, fatigue etc

I was found to be anaemic last year and was given 3 months worth of high dose ferrous sulphate. I didn’t look forward to taking them as I expected problems but fortunately I was ok, and on my last blood test my iron levels are now normal again. I also feel so much better. Its worth giving them a try.

Hi

Just saying that you can also be anaemic through B12 deficiency and low folc acid. Anoth odd bklood test away from norm. I was found and I take 1 under tongue nugget 2 days week to keep me at 400-500level. Solgar Gold Top but I'm running out and no one can get it! No injections please.

Our platelet test shows 400 as normal.?

Have a B12 test.

Iron tablets ugh. Are you on an anti-co.agulant? You could be bleeding internally. Get urine and BO checked for a start.

Iron is found in potatoes, greens, meat, fish etc. Healthy eating is best.

if you find the ferrous sulphate troublesome, yoou may find ferrous fumarate kinder which is what my haematologist prescribed

hi, what was your haemoglobin? My problem was I couldn’t take iron tablets because for some stupid reason I carry too much Ferritin!! My haemoglobin went down to 93. I felt awful. Yet others have to go through life with it lower.

I do hope the tablets help you.
