Many abnormalities in my full blood count

hi, i got my blood test results and would like some help figuring it out as my appointment to review my results is quite far away. I had a platelet count of 474 and 8.8% of eosinophil. I had also many * in my full blood count as they were either too low or high. Is there something i should be concerned about? Also I am only 21 so i don't know if its supposed to be like this.

Hello Inihs, I can understand your concern about the results and the fact that your review is far away, perhaps you can ask your GP if your appointment can be expedited.

Has your GP discussed any potential reasons for the problems you are experiencing, and why you have had the blood tests? Has it been discussed with you that you may have one of the MPNs?

Sorry for all the questions. Best wishes, Maz

Hi Mazcd, no worries about the questions! I actually tried to get my results reviewed soon and they let me come in on Saturday so that would be about 2 days from now. I went to the GP because I was feeling giddy and was tired very often so I suspected that it may be iron deficiency or anemia. Is it possible for the FBC to be abnormal with these two conditions?also, I have never heard of MPNs before

As Mazcd indicates, this needs follow up with your care team ASAP. There can be many reasons the numbers on your Complete Blood Count can be off. Some can be quite minor like a minor infection. Something to know is that the reference ranges (low-high) for each component of the CBC can vary by lab. The is true for platelets, where my lab considers 369 to be the top of the normal range when the recognized top of range is 450.

Since you cite the platelet number, a quick note on that. 474 is only slightly out of range. Many things can cause reactive thrombocytosis - bleeding, inflammation, infection, injury etc. (aka secondary thrombocytosis). Thrombocytosis can also be a primary condition call Essential Thrombocythemia, which is one of the Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN).

At this point you can have no idea why you numbers are a bit off. It could well be a minor matter, little more than a tempest in a teapot. However, best to follow up and find out what is going on. Here are couple of links so you can better understand your CBC.

Hi Hunter, thank you for the information! I have an appointment on Saturday so I will update you on this soon. I have been looking at videos and it may be possible I have iron deficiency or anemia as my iron serum was only 2 and transferrin at 2%. my iron binding serum was also quite high at 83

If you are iron deficient then thrombocytosis is a normal response. Likewise abnormalities in RBCs. Hope you get it all sorted out ASAP.
