Oxford vaccination ? live ,I have just heard an expert speak on BBC news this morning ,stating the Oxford virus is live. I wonder if GP surgeries and vaccination centres are fully aware that it will not be suitable for those of us with reduced immunity. Or am I wrong in making this assumption

Hi Piggie, This was on BBC Tv news prog this morning ,the “expert” Not one I recognise, I will try and get the details on playback. I do not wish to be alarmist but wondered if anyone else had heard of this, the “”expert” ,a doctor and professor may have got it wrong, we are all fallable

I found it on iplayer. Dr Christine Tait-Burkard from the university of Edinburgh. She said... Pfizer vaccine will still be used for more vulnerable people with compromised immune systems as it is not a live vaccine in contrast to the Oxford vaccine. This does not seem clear to me. I would still like to know categorically that the Oxford vaccine is not live.

Hi trotty, I found this link. If you scroll to the bottom of the page it explains how the vaccine works. The virus that the spike protein is injected into to create an immune response is harmless.
Morning Trotty100 my Haematologist has told me he wants me to have the Astrazeneca Covid jab, as I asked him which one he thought would be best, I also asked him were either of them a live culture like the shingles jab, and he no, so that was good for me, can’t wait to get either one as far as I am concerned, just want to get back to some sort of normal well maybe by the spring, well let’s hope. 👍

From looking at various different reports on how the vaccine works all have said that the viral parts of the vaccine are NOT able to reproduce themselves but merely teach the immune system how to react. ie they are not live. The danger to us appears to be that with reduced immune systems we might not produce as many antibodies as a healthy individual but the more people around us that are vaccinated hopefully means we should be safer if the vaccine is proven to reduce transmission.

I have written to BBC but I expect it will be some time before I get a reply if any.
I am keen to have any safe vaccination and am hoping the Oxford one is suitable as it is likely I will be offered this soon.

Yes, there is I believe some conflicting information out there about whether or not, (viral vector vaccines ~ LIVE), might not be suitable for those of us who may have a compromised immune system...
(Oxford/AstraZeneca is such a vaccine category as I currently understand things)
...Hence, this is precisely why we all need to consult with our own medical teams, (& ideally in concert w/ an MPN specialist), who also have up-to-the-minute Data for 'Best Practice' wherever COVID-19 is concerned, in my view...
(It would be doubtful that most GPs would vouchsafe such information, in my view...)
A "Wicked Problem" is the term often ascribed in academia for events such as this one is...
On the one hand, we are dealing w/ very rare types of blood cancer, where the experts are just beginning to glean greater knowledge due to the fairly recent discovery of MPN 'Driver' mutations...
...And on the other, the CV–19 virus appeared late 2019/early 2020, and best management thesis for this brand new viral strain, (where even less is known...), still has much to reveal about itself...
Globally, TRILLIONS of research dollars are being rapidly trialled & deployed in a mad-race to find the most efficacious vaccine, while all the time having to deal with the adversity of our own 'Obstructionist' form of 'Human Nature'
Would it not be astounding if at the other end of all of this we have finally launched into a global epiphany (of sorts...), concerning the ethical nature for what it might truly take to save ourselves from ourselves... (?)
(Hmmm...? Perhaps one should take all such views as a comment...

Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your views, yes there is a fair amount of conflicting information on the whole subject. My concerns were raised by the comments on breakfast tv.that the Oxford vacc is a live one.
I was told by my haematologist when first diagnosed that I must avoid live vaccines

There is a comprehensive information sheet re the current vaccines on the Blood Cancer UK website which many would find helpful for these questions but it does confirm the Oxford vaccine is not live. Quickest way to find it is to go to their FaceTime page it is the lead entry.
