Critical illness payment for PV

Hello, I did search but didn't find anything current. My son was diagnosed with PV about 2 years ago. I have had a critical illness insurance policy for years, but never thought this might qualify as a diagnosis until recently as I started reading about it. Has anyone had recent experience with PV qualifying as a cancer diagnosis for critical illness policy? I am with VOYA (We are in the US). Thank you for any input you may have!

A lot in the group have had a critical illness payout with all the different MPNs. Ours paid out for ET within 6 months of diagnosis. UK companies do recognise it as cancer and I'm sure the US ones will to. I'd contact them and start the ball rolling. Good luck.

As Chaz said, many people here have successfully claimed on their critical illness insurance for PV. I had no problem with my claim, which I made within 6 months of diagnosis. PV is a blood cancer and unless it is explicitly excluded from your policy it should be covered. There could also be a time limit to claim, from diagnosis. I suggest checking your policy exclusions and the time limits, and if it is not excluded putting in a claim. This is why we took the insurance out in the first place! Even if you have passed the time for a claim, it is worth speaking to the company and explaining the situation. In my case, I only remembered I had the policy because I fortunately read here about someone else claiming - am very grateful to this forum. Good luck!

Hi

Yes I had critical illness cover and tried to claim years back but was turned down. Tried again this year as the illness is now recognised as a cancer, I got paid out and backdated till when I was diagnosed

Hello lea44,

I remember when we submitted our claim here in the UK we were advised to include information from a specific WHO document which reclassified MPNs as cancers (a change from their previous designation as disorders). As far as I recall this was a 2006 article and that there was as a link to it here on the forum in an earlier post (2018 or earlier).

I'll see if I can find the WHO & info we included and send it to you.

It is a stressful process the not knowing so I hope you are able to resolve it soon.

All the best

This link mentions that article but I'm yet to find the article itself.

I believe it was this we included which refers to a reclassification to neoplasms.

I hope this helps.
