Hi there, Can we take Ibuprofen or any NSAIDS? I haven’t been told by my consultant not to take them, I have ET but do not take aspirin as I have the CALR mutation, if we cannot take them, why?

Hi Aruntez, I was originally on daily aspirin, but my mpn dr told me to stop taking it as studies had shown that it wasn’t effective against thrombosis and could cause bleeding in patients with the CALR mutation

Hi I wouldnt actually called it suffering Aruentez. I have CALR mutation and taken aspirin since diagnosis 5 years ago! Not a problem. I wouldn't like not to take them. I did hear that about ibuprofen so I only take it very occasionally. Lyn NZ

Ibuprofen does potentiate aspirin. Not a great combo. Perhaps there is some concern about blood thinning impact on its own. I would think this is a risk-benefit decision you will have to make.

Yes general consensus is not to take aspirin and ibuprofen together as it can block the way aspirin works (need to take ibuprofen 2 hours away from aspirin) and it can create more bleeding. But seen as how you're not taking aspirin it should be fine but a word of warning, long term use of ibuprofen can interfere with your heart & raise blood pressure.

Thank you, everyone, I think as I am not taking aspirin I can take ibuprofen in this situation, my back is still no better. Just one more thing, what is the relationship between MPNs and inflammation?

From what I have read, MPNs are a form of inflammation. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in my early 30’s, arthritis in my hips and lower back in my mid-40s, and ET Jak 2 when I was 52. There are some articles I read on this site that there is a connection between inflammation and mpns. Now 12 years later, I progressed to MF.

The only advice I can give you is to continue to exercise, but pace yourself and if you need to take a break or rest, do it. And, by the way, I do take ibuprofen but very rarely and if I feel it’s the only thing that will help. You need to talk to your doctor about it since everyone is a little different.

Take care.

I have ET and take hydroxycarbamide. I was told NOT to take Ibuprofen as it has an effect on platelets

Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs may affect the way platelets work and could interfere with normal blood clotting.

Well this is worrying! I have a lot of joint pain due to my hyper mobility and I often take ibuprofen, paracetamol seems to have no effect on me. I will have to ask my consultant about this if my appt in July goes ahead, and in the meantime take them two hours apart. I did ask the pharmacist when I was first prescribed aspirin and he assured me it was fine to take both together!
