Kids flu sprays

Hi folks, can anyone remember how long you have to keep away from the kids when they have the flu spray up their noses as I know it’s different from us adults being a live culture and if they sneeze, think it 48 hours but not sure, cannot remember from last year how long I kept my distance 🤪

Hi Jean, I think we should just keep away from grandkids all the time! Only joking as 4 days into a flu type bug, lovingly shared by our two monkies! I don’t usually get these bugs so easily but doc not sure if it’s a combination of flu jab and grandkids. Had 2 days of cooking at 40C, had ask doc for a house call cos couldn’t walk without staggering about. Not wished on anyone! Take care, I hope no one else gets this. Take care everyone, Aime xx😻😻

Hi Sally, sorry to hear you've not been well either. It seems to be a real nasty which targets your weak spots; hubby ended up with chest infection, with me it's gone for my sinuses and tonsil roots (tonsils out when I was 8!). Hope you're better very soon. Kind regards Aime

Hi Jean,

My grandson had his on Wednesday and I picked him up from School on Thursday. I’m always careful if I need to wipe a runny nose but I’ve always been fine. He’s five now and is going through the no kisses only hugs stage. Love him 💓

Best wishes

Judy

I hope you feel better soon Aime. Xx

Hi Judy, yes I know I was fine last year, but did leave it for a good 48 hours, bloods are all in the normal range at the moment, might have to leave the pick up from school on Tuesday though as that’s the day he is having the spray.

I didn’t realise this was an issue - I had my flu jab a few weeks ago and need to take my 2 year old for nasal spray this week. Also impossible to be away from her for 48 hours.

Are there real risks?

Thanks

If your immune system is severely compromised then you need to be careful. I take 500 mg of Hydroxy every day and 1000 on one day. My Dr said it wouldn’t be an issue. As he said, if it was my child, not my grandchild, then I wouldn’t be able to stay away. Just be careful of bodily fluids, runny noses, nappies etc. Over the last six years of Hydroxy I haven’t stayed away from my grandchildren.

Very hard for you but just try to avoid running noses and wash your hands afterwards, if you can and of course keep your head averted if she sneezes.

One year I scared the living daylights out of my grandchildren by wearing a face protector mask over my nose and mouth 😷 never did that again.

As long as your bloods are in the normal range should not be to much of a problem I would of thought.

My daughters children’s school nurse has said that I need to avoid for two weeks, that I think is extreme.

Hi,as piggie50 says if it was your own child you would be around 24/7 for them, as she also mentioned it is just about taking precautions. It is only when your Immune System is really comspromised then you would be advised to stay away. We are after all taking low doses of Hydrea, I take 3 a day and 4 on the seventh day but that is insignificant compared to people having it through Iv.

I have a 1 year old and I was told that because the nasal spray contains a live virus but the injection doesn’t when my daughter is due to have hers she can have an injection instead. Of course I feel bad that she’ll have an injection but it’s to protect us both.

I take Hydroxy and interferon but if you aren’t taking medication maybe you won’t be immunosuppressed like I am.

Hi.

If you take Hydroxycarbamide then you need to stay away from children having the live, nasal spray, flu vaccine for 24 hours.

I have double checked this as I work in a school and therefore cannot work when the vaccines are administered, nor the following day, as it has to be a full 24 hours. Apparently it’s the sneezing afterwards that can cause the live vaccine to be spread.

I hope that helps.

Is that just hydroxy then? I’m on Interferon.

Thanks

Hi. Unfortunately I don’t know the answer to that.

MPN voice does do some excellent, downloadable, leaflets which may help answer your question.

As I’m unable, I would say if in doubt, avoid children, who’ve had live vaccine, for

24 hours.

Alternatively you could contact your gp or haematologist for advice.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Think it might apply to most of us irrespective of what drug we are on..

Oh hell! I’m on hydroxy, I work in special schools with some very poorly kids and lots of snotty, dribbly kids. My own son is also due the vaccine this term, think I’ll contact Occ health and the school nurses and get some advice. 😬🤦‍♀️😊 xx
