Travelling to hot / humid climates

Hi,

I live in Australia and am going to Bali for a holiday in April 2020. I've just been diagnosed with ET and am wondering if anyone has any advice for dealing with the heat. I'm not great with heat and humidity so grateful for any tips. I will be using common sense (meaning drinking plenty of water etc) so hoping for any other tips.

Thanks for your help.

Some medication makes us more susceptible to skin cancer so check on the skin protection you need. I personally cover up and use an umbrella because dislike the feel of cream in a humid climate. I never sit in the sun. Enjoy your time in Bali! Sallie

Hey Michelle... :-)

My name is Steve and I am from Sydney, where incidentally it is really quite warm at the moment...

Yes, keeping really well hydrated is usually the best bet and also wearing super light weight cotton fabric, and nothing too tight fitting if you can... A/C helps too of course... ;-)

You mentioned that you are ET, and recently diagnosed... Have you asked your GP & Specialist about your travelling also...?

If you do suffer from Very High Platelets you might need to take some extra precautions...

Hopefully, everything will be just fine and you'll have a most memorable break for all the right reasons etc...

What medications are you currently taking Michelle?

Best wishes :-)

Steve

PS. Michelle, MPN-MATE.COM is a recently launched Australian MPN website too that you might wish to check out sometime...

Wear loose linen or cotton clothing keep a damp flannel with you so you can refresh your face and neck. Enjoy

Hi Michelle,

I also have ET. Since years (diagnosis 2 years ago) there are days when I feel the heat radiating through my body as soon as the sun touched my skin or head, and I felt suddenly faint, therefore I stay covered with white linen/cotton clothes, wear a nice big straw hat. I also suffer from absolute exhaustion when I get too warm, therefore, I take a damp beach towel, lie naked on the bed/couch and put the towel on me. This works miracles in extreme heat and for heat sensitivity. I have problems with warm/hot humidity because I was born anaemic and I sometimes have trouble getting oxygen.

I was in Korea in the summer and only one hot day got me. Unfortunately, it was a travel day, flying from Jeju island to Seoul. As soon as I was out of the sun I was fine. In the sun, I, covered, dragged myself to keep up with the others. It may be that this is caused by my Anagrelid (med).

Also, the heat sensitivity is also a cold sensitivity. I was in Italy in June and got into the hotel pool (25 degrees) and my body would just not adjust to the temp. and I was shivering. The following day, I was feeling better and adjusted to the cool water in just a minute. This is nerve racking.

I wish you a fabulous time! Use this as a learning experience. Observe yourself. We sometimes have to adjust to live a good life. No problem. Eat lighter foods to keep your circulation and digestion going freely. Anag

I agreed with everybody's suggestions, keep cool, keep well hydrated and protect yourself well in the sun. If your platelets are high, it pays to get advise from your haematologist prior to your trip. Also make sure you move around on the plane whenever possible.
