Having teeth out

Hi anyone had any experience having teeth out? I’m in agony, been to the emergency dentist and been given penicillin for 5 days, but advised I need 2 teeth out, big ones at the back as well. Have to go back when I decide. Really worried about bleeding and not healing due to me having ET Jak 2 positive. I’m on aspirin and hydroxycarbamide. Any advise would be grateful. Will my Heamatologist need to speak with my dentist? Am I best having general anesthetic rather than local? Jackie

Hi, there. Sorry, you are in that position. I think you should talk to your own dentist first and ask if it is really the case that you need to take them out. Is a root canal treatment totally out of the question? Now, I guess you were given antiobiotics to both take the pain away as well as making sure local anaestetic will work if needed. Sometimes, if the tooth is inflammed it wont work but that will be checked before treatment starts. Yes, you must tell your dentist what medication or herbs or anything else you are taking as it can be important.Regarding genaral anaestetic ...firstly dentists only do them at hospital and the waiting time might be long. Secondly a GA is always as risk in other ways....You can sometimes have IVsedation or and Nitrous oxide gas at the dentists practice but you have to be picked up and cannot drive after and it is quite a long session.

Hope it all goes well whatever you do!

Oh Grumpyfairy, ouch!!! - I really hope the penicillin kicks in quickly for you. My wonderful dentist who I would have trusted to do any procedures has retired + after a 2 page risk assessment (I’m ET JAK2+) my new dentist has agreed that that any extractions (though would need to be unavoidable) should be done at hospital, be stitched + blatted with antibiotics to heal (would have to come off aspirin for the week before) - hope you have a good dentist that you can have confidence in and get sorted.

Yes love, I had a molar out last year. Dentist was notified of my condition and told of my Hydroxy but was not phased by it. Had no problem with the extraction at all so don’t suffer anymore, get it gone x

Hi not very nice for you. It would be best to discuss with your dentist about your ET, your meds and your concerns, and then get advice from your haematologist or nurse specialist to find out if you need to stop taking your Hydroxy or Aspirin before you have the teeth taken out. Maz

Hi I’ve had out two implants. They were so difficult to remove the consultant had to send away for special equipment. As a precaution my dental consultant required a letter from my heamo saying all would be well. Also my heamo gave me a prescription to prevent excessive bleeding which I took at the first attempt but didn’t feel the need so didn’t at the secOnd.

I have just had several teeth out and am now a member of the gummy mummys!!!! My consultant said it wasn't a problem. My dentist wanted to check that. The worst part are the numbing jabs!!!!!!! Get it done sooner rather than later is my advise. Good luck.

Having teeth extracted hurts. Infections hurt even more. My hemo had me stop aspirin for a week before extraction or any other surgery. Since HU compromises you immune system and the mouth is a germy place, perhaps some prophylactic infection control would be in order for any future dental work. Hope the ouch goes away soon.

Hi , Dentist's nowadays are well in tune with meds and illnesses for treatment. That’s why they always ask what meds are you on and what you are taking it for before testing you.

Getting your teeth out will be quick and pretty pain free and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how quick it is and even ask yourself.. What was I worrying for... Good luck with your dentist 👍

Hello Grumpyfairy, sorry to hear you are uncomfortable. I had an abscess and then had to have the tooth removed at hospital. It required a local anaesthetic, the hole was packed to stop the bleeding and then stitched. My dentist contacted my haematologist for advice before hand. Hope it goes well for yoy

I am a dental surgeon. In general tooth extraction should be very easy- we have excellent intrumentation. However, the dentist should absolutely be in contact with your hematologist/oncologist.

I just had a molar pulled. The dentist said it wasn’t necessary to stop the aspirin my hemo damaged I stop it 5 days before and start 2 days after. I was on only 50mg of aspirin 4x per week, but also take a natural blood thinner (Ginkgo biloba) 3 - 60mg Tablets daily. Aspirin needs a week to get out of you system. Ginkgo only needs 9-12 hours. Therefore, I still took Ginkgo the night before the procedure and started with 60mg of Ginkgo the following day. Since there was no bleeding I was on my normal blood thinning routine 2 days later. Unfortunately, I had an infection and also took antibiotics for a week. I always try alternatives, but emergencies are emergencies and western medicine is good in dealing with them. I plan to get 4 more teeth out. I am removing 3 root canals and a dead tooth by choice. I don’t want any dead teeth in my mouth because there is a constant low level of inflammation in the body and I want to get rid of it. This is the same reason why I am removing all of my 20+ Mercury fillings that have been in my mouth for 39 years (since I was 15)!!!!! Step by step. Proper procedure is important and a good binder (Chlorella from V*teras) to get the mercury out of the body, taken at the right time as to not clean out my meds. Thereafter, I will get metal-free denture pieces that I can take out in the evening. I believe that a clean mouth is of utmost importance for our optimized health. Don’t be afraid if you have a good dentist. Let your hemo guide you. Ginkgo is a natural blood thinning alternative, but like all meds and natural substances, it is good to try them out and see how they work for you. Good thing is, Ginkgo is only in the body for a short time compared to aspirin and can be adjusted quickly! Good luck, Grumpyfairy!

Hi everyone, thank you all so much for your replies, very much appreciated. A quick update on toothgate, well four and half days on antibiotics and still look like Alvin the chipmunk, in fact I think I’ve got facial cellulitis, feeling sorry for myself, living off soup and yogurt, hope to get into dentists tomorrow to discuss things, I’ve spoke to my Heamatology nurse and she says im ok to carry on with aspirin and hydroxy before having them out, which I am a bit concerned about after reading some of your replies, but I’m thinking maybe different countries differ? Thank you again for advice, I’ll keep you posted, regards Jackie x
