Have any of you experienced problems with your teeth after starting HU!

I've been getting terrible mouth ulcers and been prescribed hydrocortisone lozenges.

But my big problem now is ive suddenly got 3 wobbly teeth and gums are tender

Anyone else had this problem?

TIA

No loose teeth but ulcers when I started HU. I used anabesol liquid, making sure it was by my bed when I went to sleep. While they have cleared up, I still have a tendency for my mouth to become sore, and the odd ulcer. Sallie

Good Evening, I too have had trouble with my teeth since starting HU , I have spoken to my dentist but he is not sure if it is this that is causing my problem, A number of teeth have just broken away and they are extremely sensitive. Any type of liquid hot or cold doesn't matter, food the same I just don't understand why nor does anyone else, Doctor or dentist. You are not alone . sorry I can't be of anymore help.

Good morning 130396. I have had terrible ulcers too. I take the hydrocortisone tablets too. Anything is better than a mouthful of ulcers. My teeth and gums have deteriorated as well. A new plate for me now as having to have mt teeth out.

Hello Tia,

Yes, me too.

I have found that brushing first with sensodyne and then with my rinsed brush dipped in a little baking soda.

If you then wash the soda around your mouth for a few minutes before spitting it out and don't rinse it away, it really helps cure the ulcers.

Hope it works for you too.

Thank you Tia..just started taking Hydrox last week. This is all new. Your tip for brushing is going to be very helpful for me.

I hope this finds you very well.

Hi

Yes me too. The mouth ulcers swollen tongue and constant bone pain and deteriorating teeth all point to me being intolerant to the hydroxycarbamide so I have just changed over to weekly pegylated interpheron alpha injections.

I was diagnosed in March this year with ET. Just had a bone marrow biopsy to check it wasn't anything else because it was making me feel so ill.

I was taking 1mg of Hydroxycarbamide daily and 75mg Clopidrogrel. My platelets have only come down to 450 once and at the moment are 650.

Today I'm going for a consultation at Guys for Dental. I'll let you know what they say.

Best wishes

I had a lot of mouth ulcers in the beginning and very sore gums but they subsided very quickly. It is one of the side effects. I've never experienced any problems with my actual teeth though.

I had mouth ulcers while on hu, and also the enamel on my teeth has been seriously weakened, I've lost bits of teeth and had to have various fillings. A couple of teeth need crowns when I can afford it. The dentist said hu is bad for teeth. I am now on Anagrelide so hoping they don't get worse with this drug. I have bleeding gums too, I use Corsodyl mouth wash twice a day, don't know whether it helps but anythings worth a try.

My mouth ulcers cleared up after about two years on Hydroxy.

I used bonjela and alcohol free listerine mouthwash, and a rechargeable battery toothbrush.

I take calcium and vitamin D, and multivitamins for seniors.

Yes like the others the first few years on HU I had ulcers and sore mouth but not so much these days - I did find the famous drink lots of water routine helped a lot and keeping a good dental routine bit more than the average and used one of the homeopathic drops used for mouth problems from chemotherapy treatment (altho always need to check any homeopathic treatment with your consultant first) - but it will ease once your body gets used to HU. But teeth and gums just been far more sensitive and had more dental treatment in the last few years than the previous 30 years!! All the best

My teeth/gums have become more sensitive but they were becoming that way anyway....so not sure if Hydea has contributed towards this or not?

YIKES! I never knew about teeth breaking etc. very scary. I'm suddenly am having sore gums after 2 months on higher dose of HU. Now 1,000 mg alternating w/ 500 mg. t started using prescription FLORIDE TOOTH PASTE 4 months ago to protect enamel. That might help you all with teeth weakening. But I'm wondering if that and higher HU dose are causing my sore gums which weren't a problem until HU increased. And my dr. also said to avoid mouth wash with alcohol.

Anyone know gum & tooth problems are from the HU being in our mouth when we take it or is it systemic (once in blood system)?

Thanks. Katie

I was diagnosed six years ago, Started with phlebotomy for a year, they weren't seeing the reduction in platelets they hoped for, even with weekly pints being drawn off. They started me on Hydrea. Soon i started having side effects. Weight gain, tooth decay, tooth breakage, thinning skin, periods of extreme fatigue I'm on 1500mg I sometimes wonder because the symptoms of Pv and the side effects of HU are similar. But when my physician said he had only seen my blood levels in autopsies, I guess it's better than where i was headed

Hi. Sorry to hear about your problems. You should talk to a really good dentist & here are some suggestions I follow that make a difference. You may already do this but before you swallow your Hydroxyurea take a sip of water & hold it in your mouth. Then swallow that water, immediately put in your Hydroxyurea & swallow it right away with more water. You want as little residue of Hydrea left in your mouth as possible. And keep drinking lots of water all day. Many say 2 liters a day. Be sure you’re using an extra soft toothbrush, then make it even softer by running it under super hot tap water. Brush very gently & don’t use any toothpaste, mouthwash, etc with whiteners or anything like that. You want the basic plain toothpaste or something for sensitive teeth. Your dentist can apply a tooth protector a few times a year. They dab it on and in less than a day it’s just a thin unnoticeable protective shield on your teeth. Also avoid acid food & beverages as much as possible and rinse well after consuming any. Hope that works for you. Katie

PS. Hi, look at the link in Doveme’s post above, it has good information. Also keep your mouth moist. At night I use XyliMelts while I’m sleeping and during the day I use ACT Dry Mouth lozenges if I can’t be drinking water. Katie
