fluoride for teeth when on hydroxyurea?

My dentist has recommended that I start using fluoride gel trays for my teeth to protect them while taking the hydroxyurea. Has anyone heard about this? I have Essential Thrombocythemia (high platelets) & as I understand it I will be taking the hydroxyurea for the rest of my life.

He made 2 soft plastic (?) mouthtrays from an impression of my teeth. You put a thin ribbon of 1.1% sodium fluoride gel (prescription) into the trays and leave it on for1 minute, spit it out & wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking. You can do it without the trays and spread it around with a toothbrush, but he made my trays for free for me and it works better with the trays. He said that the chemo can destroy your teeth.

Never visited my dentist more than every two years for minor fillings, now on Hydroxy and have to go every 6 months, I have had three root canal filling within the last three months cost me over £1200.

BTW wouldn’t presume you will be on Hydroxy for the rest of your life! Treatments changing all the time. And disease / symptom burden seems to change too. I’m keeping an open mind! 🤣🤣

Haven't heard of this but it may help explain why only having been diagnosed a year ago I have needed 2 root canal treatments with another 2 teeth playing up occasionally. Don't know if this would help my roots though. Still good to know, thanks for sharing.

My partner is a dentist with ET Jak+, on Hydrea and does no more than brush his teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste as he has always done.

I went to the dental hygenist for cleaning and she indicated that I should start using Biotene, to keep the mouth moist and in balance. She indicated that even with water, that the balance can get off therefore the Biotene. She also commented that the inside of the mouth was pale in comparison to last visit in April. In July diagnosed with ET and currently on 500 HU per day.

Hello, I have MDS and thrombocythemia. Also taking Hydrea. Oncologist says I need to take 4 - 500 mg of Amoxicillin (2 gm) one hour before having teeth cleaned or before any invasive dental procedure. Does this make sense to you?

Hi the advice given to you by your oncologist about taking Amoxicillin is specific advice for you, as your oncologist knows your full medical history, it is probably different for other people. Maz

Yes! It sounds crazy, considering that I'm a female, 95#. Going to take 2 (1 gm). That should be plenty!

I am aware that prophylactic antibiotics are suggested prior to dental procedures if you have a cardiac condition. I have a mitro valve prolapse (heart murmur) and prior to changes made by the American Heart Association I was prescribed antibiotics before dental procedures. My heart murmur has gotten better and am downgraded so no need to take anymore.

I know many different health problems require antibiotics before oral surgery. Have not heard of doing it before cleaning but MDS may be different. You might want to ask this as a new and separate posting question so others will notice it. Best to you. Katie

I’m wondering if it’s not only Hu but also pv. I’m on Pegasys. My first year dx I had lots of problems with teeth sensitivity. Now on duraphat prescription tooth past. My teeth and gums now healthy.

I have ET and I'm on Pegasys and shortly after started up some 3 1/2 years ago, my teeth started cracking-- the front teeth with vertical lines from top to bottom and the molars simply broketo bits little by little. I was sure it was caused by the medicine, but my doctor and dentist would not listen !!

I'm glad to here that I'm not alone -- with this I can put on more pressure hopefully !!!

Hi having read the posts I am keen to find out about getting Duraphat toothpaste on prescription. Do get it from your dentist or doctor? I have ET and after taking hydroxy for almost 6 years my teeth are starting to crumble. I have been recommended Duraphat but it is very expensive at almost £8 for a 50g tube!! Regards Sue

I’m completely against fluoride. It is a bi-produkte of Aluminium and is basically toxic. There are many peer reviewed studies on this. I am not on HU, therefore I don’t know if there is a specific problem with the teeth. I take Anagrelid. If this is somehow making your teeth susceptible to cavities, then I think the benefit of having a fluoride treatment outweighs the consequences. 😁

My brother is a dentistry student, and he does pretty well. Recently he finished a course at acceleratemypractice.com so that now he can start his official job at a real dental clinic. I spoke to him on this topic as our aunt is leukemic. So he said that for leukemic patients, dental treatment should focus on preventing injury, mouth infections, and oral hygiene (brushing, fluoride use, and a noncariogenic diet) should be encouraged throughout treatment. I think that you should follow the same rules.

Fluoride for teeth when it is on hydroxyurea is something useful but not for all types of teeth. What Peter can use for others can be enormously bad. And in order not to make such mistakes it is very good if you do first of all a check at a dentist. He will tell you what would be good for your tooth enamel. I personally use dentalservicesmaryland.com, but if you have a dentist that you go to since childhood is even better, because he knows how the growth of your teeth has evolved. I was hoping you'd all be fine !
