hydroxyurea can increase uric acid?
How long have you been on HU..?
I’m on Pegasys but was given Allopurinol when starting treatment as platelet reduction can cause a gout flare up. Stopped it now as no gout symptoms once treatment was stabilised.
Yes! I suffer, now and then from gout. But when I do it is really really terrible. It ususally lasts for 6 weeks or so. Interesting thing is, when I spend time in warmer climate it does not happen......
as I understand it, if you have high levels of some cells such as reds it will cause/exacerbate gout, but you can reduce this by taking allopurinol. Don't think it is linked to hydroxy. sounds like u need to get some allopurinol asap?
I take Allopurinol alongside interferon and have done since diagnosis, dose has been reduced over time but was told to stay on them until my platelet count reduces.
Hi Gringz I have been on Allopurinal along with Hydrea since 19th Feb. Same as others said the Allopurinal is to try and control uric acid levels to prevent gout. I had been taking it in the morning with my aspirin but found I was feeling out of sorts during the day so take it now with Hydrea in the evening. Interesting you said how achy your feet have been since on Hydrea. Sore stiff feet and hands have been one of my symptoms for over 2 yrs but I have noticed a big increase in how sore my feet are since being on treatment. It feels like every bone hurts. I am on my feet all day for work which probably isnt helping but as I have been tested for gout and don't have it im assuming the achy feet is more to do with having ET or an autoimmune condition which I'm waiting to be investigated for.
Hope Allopurinal gives you some relief. From what I hear gout can be incredibly painful.
Take care
Mandy
Hello I have been prescribed allopurinol since the day I started hydroxycarbamide to prevent gout.
I understand that there is a link to being on Hydroxy and gout, and, had I not been on allopurinol already when I recently started Hydroxy, my haematologist would have prescribed it. What I have read somewhere is that an excess of uric acid is released because so many platelets are being killed off when on hydroxy.
My platelets is raging in 1500, im taking HU 3x a day and my feet really hurts of gout
You certainly are having a horrible time, gout really hurts!
When you were first given allopurinol, did your doctor prescribe an anti inflammatory drug for you? When I started allopurinol, my GP gave me a course of anti inflammatory pills. She said that if I was put on allopurinol without them then allopurinol could cause a flare up of gout because it messes with the level of uric acid, and it would take time for the body to adjust to things. I had to be on the anti inflammatory medication for about 2 weeks, then was able to go off it and just stay on the allopurinol. I am not a doctor, so I can't really give medical advice, but I am wondering if you need to be on a course of anti inflammatory medication to treat the gout itself. The allopurinol simply lowers the amount of uric acid in the blood, and makes it less likely that you will get gout, but if you have gout already you will need something to clear that up. Anti inflammatory medication is sometimes used for this, another effective medicine that is used for gout is colchicine. Your doctor would have to work out what was safe for you to take with your Hydroxy.
I do hope you are able to get help with this really soon.
Best Wishes,
Peter
