My dentist gave me a tub of the numbing ointment he uses prior to shots to use while eating. He said to use Biotin products for dry mouth. The Hydrea causes your body to be to acidic. Drink 3 liters of water per day and lots of vegetables!

Thanks Blessed...those are great tips. I was on a high alkaline diet when I first went on HU but I found it very difficult...I finally settled with drink water, lemon water, lots of veggies, eat simple....few to no packaged food etc. I can manage that so far.

Yo Twinkly - I dunno bout the loss of taste to be honest but I personally wouldnt put it down to the condition. I have had many painful mouth ulcers over the years on Hydrox as they are a recognised side effect and a blasted nuisance. It could be the anti-biotics, which I have never had prescribed for my ulcers. I do recall going through a phase of eating very spicy food to gain some satisfaction from eating but that has passed so maybe its a temporary thing. And finally I'm not one to preach but please ask your questions at clinic even though you may not always get a satisfactory or reassuring answer. Cheers

I have had many painful mouth ulcers while on HU. The best thing I have found over the years of trying different things is Colloidal Silver Solution used as a mouthwash. I keep it in my mouth for about 30 seconds just before bed and almost always the ulcer is gone in the morning - some little menaces take 2-3 treatments. Mouth ulcers often make me think I have a sore throat too but It is usually just the ulcer. I have never used any prescribed antibiotics but Silver is a natural antibiotic and works well for me - also my partner who gets ulcers too has tried it and it works for him too.

I had mouth ulcers when I first started taking HU but have thankfully not had any since. I thought that was one of the side effects for HU that is noted as a "let your Hema/onc doc know right away. Be well Twinkly.

Hey Twinkley simply being flippant - no change there - that reminds me of a song from my younger years by Toni Basil that you could sing to him as he drains your blood into those wee tubes that appear much larger than they are. 'Hey Mickey you're so fine. you're so fine you blow my mind HEY MICKEY- HEY MICKEY. Oh Mickey what a pity, you don't understand you take me by the veins when you've taken me by the hand and so on . . . . Its good you have some 'eye candy' to ease the way X

Hi there, I had some mouth ulcers when I started taking HU( 18months ago). My consultant and dentist recommend Corsodal (?) which you can buy over the counter. Strong taste and stings like crazy... .but works! and don't seem to be too bothered by them too much now.

Its the flippin cough that's come back for me, had it last winter and just disappeared in the spring!

Happy Christmas and New Year to all fellow MPN sufferers xx
