After 3 years of suffering with Chronic Migraine, and 3 months of waiting for my Botox - I finally had my first appointment today. I definitely underestimated how painful it was going to be, but let’s hope the pain was worth it! Fingers crossed it starts to help over the next couple of weeks, as I’ve already tried
- Amitriptyline
- Sumatriptan
- Pizotifen
- Propanolol
- Ajovy
- Topiramate
And then will keep up with the treatment in the hopes that it should start to work 🤞🏼

Yes it takes a 2 weeks to effectively paralyse those muscles. But it can often make you worse before it makes you better, so it's important to hold in to that fact. I've had Botox for years and with a few breaks for pregnancy and CGRP etc and the first round often makes me worse. Try not do anything too strenuous with your neck, like over the head weights bc that can aggravate things as obviously you aren't able to recruite the same group of muscles as you previously did. After a while your neck adjusts and can cope. Fingers crossed!
Hi I've had migrane s for over 30 years, but worse over last couple of years. I've taken same meds as you, except Ajovy. I'm waiting for botox, been waiting 6months so far. Will be interested to know if it works for you. I hate needles but having migraine is worse. Good luck, fingers x
Mary1959 I would definitely start hounding them over the phone - one person told me I wasn’t even on the list. 3 months was long enough to wait as it is! I was so close to going private before they rung me and offered a cancellation. Have you been offered Ajovy? Apparently it’s great for some but didn’t help for me. The needles were horrible, especially in the scalp - but if it improves my migraines I’m willing to try anything! Thank you 🩷
No haven't tried Ajovy, I'm hoping the headache specialist will try me on it. I'm going to ring them and see if there's any news on my appointment. Thanks
Have been on Botox for five years for my chronic migraines and it has been extremely effective. My norm is now two migraines per week not daily as before. Yes, the procedure is painful but can be so very worth it. Hope they are equally successful for you. Next round of injections will be easier. You’ll know better what to expect. Best of luck to you. Hang in there.
Josie53 that certainly sounds promising, I too have them every single day and it completely drains the life out of me, it’s insufferable. If it reduces the number per week and the intensity of the pain, I’ll be more than happy!
Yes, at least I know now what to expect next time.
Hi, hope it works for you. Were you referred by the doctor/specialist, and when you say chronic migraine can I ask how bad your migraines were in order to get the Botox. I’ve suffered with severe migraine all my life and have tried the medications you listed above and rely on sumatriptan. Have thought about Botox but doctor has never offered it.
Frenic76 thank you! I was referred by the doctor to the consultant, who trialled me on numerous medications, and then after the Ajovy injection referred me to another hospital for Botox. My migraines are horrendous, almost debilitating, I get them daily now. Sumatriptan did nothing for me unfortunately. It’s definitely worth asking if you can have it - I’m going to see if it works for me, I’ll give anything a go to reduce the number I get and also the severity.
