Hi everyone I have recently just miscarried I was 10 weeks pregnant and I have suffered from severe chronic migraines for the past year (I also have temporal lobe epilepsy) my neurologist doesn’t know what’s causing them and I have tried various pain killers, beta blocker ect nothing helps. When I was pregnant though I didn’t get one migraine! I got 2 headaches which were different and mild and now am not pregnant I have had 2 severe migraines again I am thinking is there a link in hormones with mine and is their anything I could take or do to help the migraines? Had anyone else experienced this? Thank you.

Absolutely definitely YES! This is exactly what happened to me. I use to get monthly headaches with my periods. I remember distinctly that they went away when I was pregnant! However, for me I didn’t really think about it until I got to the menopause when I started to get terrible migraines on a much more regular basis! ( sorry to be bearer of bad news!) They say Migraines are due to either a slump in oestrogen levels ( just before menstration) or fluctuating levels of oestrogen and progesterone as well as a slump in oestrogen levels as In menopause)!, Pregnancy stablilses our hormones and elevates them which stops migraines! My advice would be to keep getting pregnant and stay pregnant!! Seriously I’ve said all along please can someone develop a safe drug which emulates pregnancy ( without us actually being pregnant) because that is a cure for these beastly hormonal migraines!!🙁

Aww I was hopeing ther was some sort of birth control tha could help or anything that could release the same hormones that pregnancy does? I can’t have anymore I already have one daughter and lost this baby and I was extremely sick with hyperemesis with both pregnancy’s so won’t be doin it again! And no I am not looking forward to menopause then! Thanks for your reply, what do you use to help with your migraines? Thanks again hope your well x

Yes I was exactly the same..had migraines since I was 14 years old and they completely stopped while pregnant only coming back within a couple of days after giving birth....I get them twice a month..lasting a few days each time...during ovulation and also as my period is finishing...it's definitely hormones in my case...sounds like yours is too...I take Sumatriptan and it's the only thing that's ever worked for me..

Aw sumatriptan doesn’t really help it eases them off but not that much I have to literally lie still in a dark quiet room with an ice pack on the back of my neck/head and just bear through it, I was hoping like a certain contraceptive could help or anything tha makes the same hormones as in pregnancy if that was even possible? I duno but am so depressed these migraines are back, thanks for the reply hope your well x

Try seeing a specialist in HRT, a GP won't be enough. Get a blood test that checks the levels of your hormones - estrogen, progesterone AND testerone. Also consider looking at your cortisol and thyroid levels. Look into DHEA. You may benefit from balancing your hormones with HRT. Usually this is done with menopausal and post-menopausal women, but I've known women in their 30s and 40s who have tried this.

Aww thank you ther must definitely be some link with my hormones and these migraines I had a terrible one yesterday and then one that’s not as bad as yesterday today yet I never had one while I was pregnant, I have an app with my nurologist soon so will mention it all to him, (because I have temporal lobe epilepsy he always thinks it could be connected to that and doesnt really wana investigate any further into the reasons why am getting them) hope your well x
