Hi, I'm new and not sure what to do.

I've been feeling depressed on and off for 6 years. The doctors first told me I had manic depression and I saw a child psychiatrist but it never helped so I left. It's been really bad recently. I've had a lot of issues in my life and now I can't see it ever getting better. I don't sleep until 5 in the morning, never happy, I'm bursting into tears all the time and I can't seem to get out of bed or leave the house. I was thinking about going to the doctors but I'm not sure i want to see a psychiatrist again, also I've put off doing my university placement long enough and risk failing if I start and then have to take days off for groups or sessions. What can I do?

I think you really have to see your GP and get some kind of help. Maybe yoou need to see a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist. My psych gives me lots of strategies to cope with

my problems and , although it is slow, we are making progress. You can't carry on with your life as it is so please go and find some help. Good luck.

Deppression is not a normal state to be in, don't put up with it, at the least anti deppressants will take the edge of it and you might get a little breathing space.

wish you well.

Hi there Natch, it's nice to meet you. I hope you find this site as helpful as I do. Just because seeing a psychiatrist was the recommended action in the past, doesn't mean it's right for you now. Your views and decisions will play a hugely significant part in your treatment plan. Be honest with your GP about how you feel and te reservations you have. I'm sure they will support you in finding a way forward that is agreeable to you x

Thank you everyone. I went a while back with the same problem when a parent died young and doctor just put it down to bereavement alone. Thinking I might go back and explain more fully this time and not give in. I wouldn't mind the idea of something less formal like mind or group work. Sometimes I think just having someone to talk to who actually gets it might help. And I'm not sure if they'd let me have anti depressants, I'm only 21 and they don't like giving me medication :/
