Mirtazapine: Been upped to the 30 mg... - Mental Health Sup...
Mirtazapine
That’s normal so don’t worry, when I started on them it made me drowsy for quite a while. It will soon balance out to be more manageable. I am on 45mg a day and take one early to late evening.
The first couple of days were very foggy and yes, I slept 16-20 hours easily. Sadly, these pills still made me drowsy after 2-3 months. I slept 12 hours a night and was sleepy during the day, too sleepy to read a book. So I watched a lot of telly.
Also, watch out for munchies, unless you want to gain weight. Mirtazapine will mess with your appetite and it’ll feel like you’re never full, so it takes some self control.
For me it was the worst - I was too tired to move and ate all the time, especially carbs. I put on 10 kg. That made me sad.
Sure, these will make you sleep well and that is a very important part of the recovery since long term sleep deprivation causes damage to the brain. When you sleep, your brain cleans out the waste. In sleep deprived people the “cleaners” sweep a bit too much, clearing out the necessary bits like synapses. Also, there are drastic changes in different parts of the brain. Some parts go into overdrive and some get very slow. So sleep all you need. Your body needs it.
I have just started so am only on 15mg. I will see my GP on Monday with regards to the dose as currently I am taking with Sertraline (which I am being weaned off of). So I am going to assume that I will be upped to 30 at least. I have found (and was warned) that once I am asleep that they help me maintain being asleep (but I am also on Quetiapine) but I am sleeping for a lot longer than I did. I have also been warned that the higher the dose the less sedative effect they have - not sure about this. As for weight gain, I have found that I have suffered with that and the not full feeling with all my medication (Venlefaxine, Quetiapine & Sertraline) so am not expecting any different with Mirtazapine. Stick with it x
How are you now?
