Hi Jayde38,

I am with you, hanging on for the New year 2018.

I chose not to take the days off between Christmas and New Year just to keep coming to work and being with people.

All that holiday frivolity and togetherness may sound good in songs and movies, and a lot of people do indeed get mighty joyful but there is also a dark flip side of sadness, rage and depression that flares between Christmas and post-New Year's.

Most people hold their feelings together during the run-up to the new year, but once the holiday letdown sets it in, calls to suicide hot lines nearly double and homicides hit their highest rate of the year. Police officers and crisis counselors put in some long days and nights :(.

People have all kinds of reasons for depression and anxiety, often known only to themselves. People tend to postpone getting any help for the blues during the holidays, when they need them the most, so they go into a sort of state of suspended denial.

Most people who start feeling suicidal during the holidays are dealing with depression already, and what pushes them over the edge is the conflict between grim reality and an anticipation of idyllic togetherness, bounteous presents and yuletide joy. Ceaseless ads of families showering each other with love and packages, and songs playing everywhere about this being "the most wonderful time of the year" don't help.

That expectation that this time we will all pull together, my family will finally love me, I will find someone to love in this magical time of year - all that stuff looks great in the magazines and movies, but it rarely really happens like that

My four "rules for coping" to for my emotionally vulnerable self at this time of year:-

First, find someone that you have to take care of. It helps give you perspective and feel needed.

Second, find someone to take care of you.

Thirdly, remember that people will love you in December as they loved you in May. If your family was dysfunctional earlier in the year, they will be dysfunctional now. So let go of any idea that everything will suddenly change and be great.

If you do get together, just tell yourself, 'We're going to be typically us as a family,".

Lastly, if you do feel bad, pick up the phone and call a friend or a helpline.

Don't put off getting help.

4 days to 2018 and counting :)

I relate.

I am actively working to not feel down.

Me and my wife are in our 50.s and she told me she missed her period. She has been going through menopause.

I was worried she might be pregnant. We use birth control but it is not always effective.

So with that, and with my narcissistic work feelings, I was denied for a job I asked for at work, I was dealing with some heavy obsessing.

We got a test from the grocery store and found out she was not pregnant. My life is back on track.

The work fail is ok too. Caring about not getting a cool job is fine. That means I am conscientious. Now it is about accepting that my boss sees me as average, or even below average.

As long as he doesn't want to fire me, I am good.

I believe in myself and am pleased with my progress this year.

I have steadily improved at the gym and mentally things are stabilizing since I quit drinking booze nearly 3 years ago.

I am looking forward to another year of physical and mental strengthening. I have also been keeping an eye on the stock market as I expect it to crash pretty soon.

Been buying precious metal stocks a bit trying to do the opposite of what the masses are doing.

Thanks.
