Depression
Hello Phoebe, depression is awful and usually changes sleep patterns, either one has difficulty sleeping, or one wants to sleep all the time. No wonder its hard for the medics to help when symptoms vary so much. Everything is also usually an effort.
However of the sleep disruption symptoms i would say you have the better of the two alternatives. Sleep means you escape depression for longer and I suspect sleep is a bigger help in bringing your depression to an end than not sleeping. Just go to bed earlier, even if this means ridiculously early which will mean more time awake during the day when others are, making it easier to exercise and get social reaction with others who will of course be keeping normal hours. Yes, this excessive sleeping is a problem but going to bed very early will at least minimise the disruption to your life.
