Circumcision - advice to pass on

hey Lads, finally getting my circumcision ✂️done next Sat at local Bupa hospital in the West Midlands.

feeling nervous and apprehensive, so thought I’d pop a post on here to all those that have had it done. What advice would you pass on?

I’m 41 having it done due to tight foreskin and re-occurring Balantis. Do an office job working from home 3 days out of 5.

thanks in advance lads 👍

I got circumcised two months ago, I was just as nervous as you. it was very difficult for me. But now that the wound has healed I can say I'm glad I did. and I don't regret it at all. I can say from experience that it is a little more difficult to endure pain, especially during erection, as well as during wound healing. But it's worth enduring all that.

this is the best information I’ve come across- circinfo.com/post-op_care/p...

The first few weeks are the hardest, get an ice pack to quell the night erections. Bathe in saline solution daily to soothe the wound and apply Vaseline after a week to keep the cut clean and protected.

You’ve got this!

I had mine around 4 months ago . I’m 58 and a diabetic. Mine was done due to Phimosis and Ballantis. Because of my diabetes healing has been slow and in still slightly bruised. At first I regretted having had it done due to extreme tenderness but in truth it’s regret for not having it done long ago. My sincere suggestion is to salt bathe the area as often as you can and pat dry. I had a container that i filled with warm salt water and dunked into 2 or times daily Moving on from that use vaseline across the newly exposed area frequently. At first you think it’s never going to end but it does get better. WARNING - Be mindful your aim is going to be very random or even multi streamed. I suggest be seated for the performance.

Good luck

good for you mate. Enjoy. It was a game changer for me

Again like the others and I think we all agree..the first few weeks are not pleasant however not intolerable..its just about learning to do things differently.

We vary on the underwear; i was 2 weeks without being able to bear anything down below , then with the help of a tip on this forum bought microfibre pants (no seam in the middle) and that allowed me to get dressed again; Others are able to bear underwear quicker.

There will be some panic about what you are seeing after your op in terms of stitches and healing.

Peeling will happen with in a few days; it looks like you've been sunburned and the skin is coming off. - this is a good sign, it's your newly exposed glans drying out and de sensitising.

Hands off for at least four weeks..but I was six before I could do anything other than pee from it and in the first few days, oh and as others have said..sit down when you pee or your bathroom will be sodden! Lol. (youll learn to do it like an adult again soon after haha)

It all comes good in the end. You won't feel any surgical pain; Like you I was done at bupa and took a general anaesthetic but I know some that get it done with a local. Those with a local seem to report no pain, and I was certainly no pain.

Get in touch if you want any more details; happy to help! I put it off for years and of course regretting it now as its so straightforward.

All the best for it! 👍👍

Hey Ben, just Got a question for you mate. I had my circ done 12 days ago, still very sore. My main concern however is I feel like the area around my frenulum is taking a lot long to heal then the rest. I’ve had some discharge but my doctor said that was normal but it always seems moist and is quite sore. Did you experience any of this?

in reply toTravis290

hi travis,

the underside/ frenulem form my own experience was the most sensitive part during recovery and took the longest to heal. It is the part which would have endured the most trauma during the op as your old frenulem would have been cut and reshaped..

having said that, it will die down quickly.. just takes a wee bit of time. Best advice i can give is be proactive with your painkillers and avoid situations where you are going to get a spike in sensitivity.

in terms of discharge i didnt get anything from the stitch line personally, but i found any emission from the penis whether that be excess urine or preejaculate followed gravity and found itself on that area. It took me a few days to work out that it was actually that.

Any weeping from the actual wound should be monitored and followed up if it is itching and excessive.

Ive assisted a few lads on here and all pretty much report the same thing but have had no complications.

Im afraid with this kind of op.. its time that heals!

All the best with it :-)

Hey mate. Congrats and best wishes for it. I was done in November (I'm in Devon, UK) so am 8 weeks in now. I have it due to phimosis - couldn't retract it even when soft after getting balanitis. I was done under local. 30 mins, didn't feel a thing and the anaesthetic injections were no worse than the ones at the dentist (just lower down!) It was a standard, freehand procedure, non-cosmetic (what they do in the USA very tight cuts removing every last mm of skin) I tool paracetamol and ibuprofen (for swelling) and a couple of Codeine in the first day after. I didn't have a dressing after and the best advice I had was to keep it upright in tight pants so it cant move. Banging into clothes etc was the worst part in the first 3 weeks. Wear a dressing if there's any bleeding from the wound. You will get night erections - can't avoid them and they will hurt and you might bleed, but they shouldn't stop it properly healing. Just don't encourage voluntary arousal ;) That's something you really need to live without for many weeks! Only other advice is keep it clean. No soap but bathe it in salt water once a day. I found immersing it in a tumbler of salt water for 5 mins or so worked well. Give it a good slosh about! Then you are in for a good few months of healing. up to about week 4/5 before stitches fully dissolve, but then sensitivity will be with you for much longer. As others have said, vaseline helps on the head, which hasn't been exposed much before. Mine is still sore to touch around the cut and frenulum. Happy to support you on your journey and remember - no question is a stupid one, OK? Cheers Man.

exact same devon! im 4 weeks ahead of you.. its been a slog but glad to be on the other side! :-)

Hello neighbour! Yes. I'll be glad when sensitivity has reduced/gone

* I read "exact same devon" as you also live in Devon - I understand now! Still UK though!

Cheers mate. How long after having it done were you up and about and able to work/resume normal activites?

Devon-uk profile image
Devon-uk in reply toBrum82

Shuffling about after a week, easier after 2 weeks - as long as I kept it held upright in tight pants. I still do that as it is quite sensitive. A lot depends on your type of work. Heavy physical will be a lot different to desk-based work.

no worse than the ones at the dentist?? the injections at the dentist hurt like hell to the point where i tear up

Devon-uk profile image

Ah ok. Then it's not as bad as that. The antiseptic alcohol wipe he used to clean beforehand stung and burned my balls like hell. That hurt more than the infections!

Hello friend I have done mine before 8 months as i had phimosis. My advise to you is to talk with your doctor before doing it.For me when i did it i thought that it was a disaster as i felt that i will not be a man again as i was in a hurry for having sex or masturbation. But all this was wrong as you must give 2 -3 months to recover as its is not so simple as doctors say. Also at the begining you may find your penis smaller but this is not true. After i can tell you i was better in size and width. So now i feel like the porn actors and i am happy i did it but ofcourse every man has his own character so talk with your doctor as if you read other coments here they are some men that have been disapointed their circumsition.Masturbation at the begining is not working but after i am better than before i have to notice to you as for sex i feel more men with my new dick.

I had my circumcision yesterday. Also had the frenulum removed. Was very nervous but overall try to relax. The only real time I felt any slight pain was when they injected the anaesthetic. It was over in seconds though. The first night was ok. No pain due to painkillers and no real discomfort from the overnight erections. Just woke up but managed to ignore it. Not painful. Day 2 was also more relaxing. No issues taking a pee. Keeping it dry and clean.

Good luck with yours

Looks like you’re off to a good start keep it up but try not to keep it up ( :-) ) . Like everyone says it constantly gets better but patience is definitely the major key.

I'm about 6-8 weeks away so no advice from lived experience just some guidance I've come across.

I noticed some good tips in this Circ Info publication, especially about sleeping, use of cold compress and wound care in general:circinfo.com/post-op_care/p...

I asked my surgeon about prescribing me some Sudafed Original Brand (mentioned on page 14/20) as it can have the side-effect of reducing erections for some blokes. The surgein seemed dubious but I'm definitely giving it a go even if it only has a placebo effect!

I get the impression that this is an op that is easier the younger you are so you are fortunate to be getting it done in your early forties.

I'm 57 so don't think it will be a walk in the park but am taking up to a fortnight off work and am hopeful the results will be worth it.

Despite the difficulties, from the advice I've read, the longer you can abstain from sexual activity up to the sixth week or longer, the better the results. He said this is to avoid splitting the penis. Those words will help focus mind over the month and a half of abstinence.

Best of luck for your surgery.
