Stitches take 10-12 days to do their job and usually start to fall out after this time. You can normally remove them (or get the doctor/nurse to do it) at 14 days to reduce swelling and prevent stitch tunnels from forming.
If they are absorbable sutures, then they will dissolve on its own.If they are non absorbable sutures and if incision is healed completely without any inflammation, swelling , or discharge from wound, sutures have to be removed manually.
If the sutures are of non absorbable material like silk, they will not comeout automatically.They will have to be removed by your doctor under sterile and aseptic condition.However if sutures are of absorbable material like vicryl, then they will dissolve on their own.
