Ultrasound scan of urinary tract

In a couple of weeks time, I am scheduled to have an ultrasound scan of my urinary tract. The letter says the procedure will take 30 mins. Has anyone had this done, and what should I expect?

I have just had an ultrasound of my kidneys and she also looked at my bladder. Using the probe and jelly to enable it to slide. Have you been asked to drink a load of water so that you attend with a full bladder? In your case she is likely to extend the probing down to your prostate. You will need to undo your trousers and have a paper towel tucked in the waistband of your underpants. It is the same procedure of a scan during pregnancy and is external and painless.

Thanks, yes I have been asked to drink 2 pints of water 1 hour before the appointment. I think that will be the most difficult part in terms of not urinating beforehand. Additionally I suppose any pressure exerted by the ultrasound probe on my bladder is likely to increase the urge to urinate!

I have had the procedure annually for the last 5 years to review things following the removal of a kidney tumour. You’ll be fine.

I had that done. Tip is to sip the water don't gulp it down

I had to remove all my clothes and wear a gown. When they apply the sensor thing the slightest pressure makes you wanna pee. Only food thing is that if you do dribble at least you don't wet your own clothes

Hey ! Yea actually everything has been summarised aptly by Hidden . It's painless , external and other than the distended bladder discomfort there isn't nothing much in it. I would suggest you to start drinking at least 1.5 hr before the USG and only sip initially . If you want you can gulp in another bottle around 20mins before USG but do have a complete bladder for optimal visualisation . They will use a probe and jelly and scan you over the lower abdomen , back , pubis and it might be little cold . If the person cannot appreciate the architecture well and asks you to drink water do drink and wait for at least 20-30mins before reattempting and don't allow the test to continue if you don't have enough distension of the bladder. I was made to drink and sit several times and my bladder felt sore from keeping it in till they called me again . All the best !
