Hi everyone , was just looking for info/advice

I had the mirena coil fitted 8 weeks ago, iam now having hot flashes , aching all over , joint pain , and no energy what’s so ever

Is this normal? Will it subside overtime ?

Any advice from anyone who has or who has had the mirena would be greatly helpful

Ps I’m almost 49 years old , and have endometriosis

Thankyou in advance

Tina x😀

it could be your body adjusting to the hormones which can take up to 3 months.

Are you taking any oestrogen? As this getting lower can also cause hot flashes.

Some people take sage supplements and say this helps

Hi thanks for replying , I guess it’s to soon for things to have settled down yet

I don’t take estrogen as I’m worried it will make my endometriosis worse ( it’s got really bad!! hense having the mirena fitted )

I will certainly give the sage a go though

Thanks

Your symptoms sound hormonal and a bit like perimenopause, so I would speak to your GP or consultant and see whether they would consider adding back some oestrogen/HRT if your symptoms persist. I'm the same age and I had much the same symptoms as a known effect of a different treatment (zoladex) and adding a low dose HRT (tibolone) resolved most of them, so it might mean you can get the good main effect (reduced endo) without as many side-effects and don't have to choose one or the other.

Your symptoms don't sound like what I experienced when I tried Mirena, which is why I think perimenopause is in the mix. I had a negative experience of Mirena and Jaydess (which is a lower dose version of the same) and had it removed at 4 months both times as I had perpetual period pains, sore breasts and low mood. However, most women I know who have tried it absolutely rave about it, so if your symptoms are tolerable I would try to persist at least to 4-5 months to see if the symptoms you are experiencing reduce. I have had so many women tell me about Mirena being the end of all periods and period pains, and the thing that stabilised their mood and other symptoms that I know my negative experience is not representative.

However, if you do have it removed be aware that there is a small chance you may get a big bleed in response as your body re-adjusts, and if you have endo you might get worse symptoms related to that for a few weeks too. I don't want to make you anxious, just to orient you that I found out after my somewhat alarming experience that this is a known thing for a minority of people coming off mirena.
