Finally, the Meningitis B vaccine will be available for free on the NHS as part of the childhood immunisation programme.
It comes after we part funded the research which led to development of the jab and after years of tireless campaigning from our team and you, our supporters.
We know that this comes too late for so many people and we will continue to be here to support those whose lives have been affected by meningitis. This is a big step forward in the fight against meningitis, but there is still much work to do.
We do not yet know the full details of vaccination programme but we will update you as soon as we know more.
This is such excellent good news - at last! Thank you to Meningitis Now for very importantly part funding the the research to develop the vaccine and the tireless campaigning otherwise no doubt this point of a vaccine in the childhood immunisation programme would not have been reached. Lets hope that babies are started to be immunised very soon.
BRILLIANT news Claire and yes thank you to Meningitis Now for fighting the cause. This as the type I had in 2008 and so its wonderful to know that this strain ill soon be much less experienced.Meningitis B has been a lifeline to me and so many others and I'll ontinue to support it in all the ways I can.
Hi Claire, I'm a little late in the plaudits but wished to add mine to the throng. Without this tireless effort to affect public policy we would be left with a cash-only (to GSK/other big pharma) alternative at prevention. As you say, it too late for so many, though we can only hope that that's a story our childrens' children can safely reflect on in the future.
I wanted to also fly the flag for a moment on student immunisation programmes and to encourage anyone going to Uni this summer to listen to your parents and loved ones who mean so well. Sadly this won't bring back my cousin Lewis who came home from Uni to see his folks thinking he had the flu and died hours later from BM, but you'll never be forgotten (lincolnshireecho.co.uk/perf....
In time I plan to add my own strength to the cause and help with raising money to continue the fight, and to repay the kindness shown me over the last 9 months. Just need a little more time yet but am cycling 50 miles a week now. I'm working on it! Slowly slowly catch the monkey.
Till then, thank you Meningitis Now, and to Steve Dayman in particular. You came to our family's side in 2011 and it has never been forgotten. I'm down the road from HQ and hope to join you and the team on 11 July to discuss the next 5 year plan.
Onwards and upwards. For you Lewis and everyone else for whom this is too late. We love you.
Many thanks for your post. We still have much work to do, before meningitis is truly beaten.
If you are able to attend on 11 July, I am sure you will find it very informative and you will be helping us to decide on our priorities for the next 5 years. As you have said, onwards and upwards.
